A battle of first place teams headlines Thursday night’s NHL Betting action. The Dallas Stars, fresh off a 4-1 home loss to the Vancouver Canucks take on the Boston Bruins who have won two straight games. Dallas appears to be losing a bit of their luster lately but the Bruins just keep plugging along!

The Dallas Stars have hit a slump after a January to remember. They are just 1-3-0 in their last four games and after going eight games without a loss on the road, the Stars have lost two straight away from home. The offense has been OK but the goaltending and special teams have really let them down.

The Stars currently own the 12th best offense in the NHL (2.8 goals per game). Brad Richards has continued his bounce back season and has 16 points in his last 12 games. Mike Ribiero also looks reborn with 17 points in his last 14 games. However Jamie Benn is out with an upper body injury and All Star forward Loui Eriksson has just one point in his last four games.

Special teams have been a major area of concern for Dallas in recent games. In their loss to the Canucks on Tuesday night, the Stars gave up two power play goals and one shorthanded tally. The power play has struggled and the penalty killing unit has given up seven goals in their last 14 attempts.

Goaltender Kari Lehtonen is mired in a slump as well. He is 1-2-0 in his last three starts with a 4.16 goals against average.

The Boston Bruins aren’t going away! Those of you waiting for the crash are going to be waiting a long time. The Bruins are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games and lead their division by four points. Boston is a surprising 6th in goals for (3.0 goals per game) and is first in goals against (2.1 per game).

Boston’s offense has been getting it done without some of their key contributors playing up to their own standards. Blake Wheeler, Mike Ryder and Milan Lucic are OK but they are not contributing on the score sheet as much as Coach Claude Julien would hope. It has been Patrice Bergeron (16 points in 12 games) and David Krejci (four points in four games) that have kept the Bruins afloat offensively.

Tim Thomas is the sole reason for the Bruins rise to prominence and their ability to stay at the top. The league leader in goals against average (1.82) is 7-1-0 in his last eight games with a 1.76 goals against average and two shutouts. Expect him to start on Thursday – he is 2-0-1 with a 0.65 goals against average in three games against Dallas.

Betting Prediction: The Dallas Stars are 14-9-1 on the road this season and are 8-2 in their last ten away from home. They are just 1-3-0 in their last four games overall but are 11-2-1 against the Eastern Conference this season. The Boston Bruins are 13-9-3 at home this season and are 8-3 in their last 11 overall.

Dallas is struggling and the last thing that a struggling team needs is to face Tim Thomas. Boston is Hot and is enjoying their place in the penthouse of the Northeast division. Expect Boston to play hard in order to keep their comfy digs!

Pick: Boston Bruins -145 and the Under – 5.5 goals
