The struggling San Jose Sharks travel to the Lone Star State to take on a surging Dallas team on Martin Luther King Day. The San Jose Sharks are comning off a much needed win against the St. Louis Blues after dropping six straight games. The Dallas Stars will be out for their fourth straight victory – one that could create more distance between them and the underwhelming Sharks in the Pacific Division.
San Jose is arguably the most disappointing team in the NHL this season – if the playoffs were to start today, they would be making tee times instead of sharpening their skates. They are 3-7 in their last 10 games and in their last eight; they have averaged just a shade over 1.6 goals per game – not good when you boast the offensive talent that the Sharks do!
The Sharks are 17th in the NHL on offense averaging just 2.7 goals per game. Their stars are playing better of late but still have some work to do in order to take this team toward legitimacy. Dany Healey has rebounded from a stretch in which he tallied just two points in six games and has registered four points in his last two, Joe Thornton has six points in three games and Patrick Marleau has three points in his last three games.
Defensively, the Sharks have been just as bad recently. Overall, they are 14th in the NHL in goals against averaging 2.8 goals per game. Antti Niemi should start in goal on Monday – Antero Niitymaki is 0-3-0 in his last three starts with a 4.08 goals against average.
The Phoenix Coyotes are on quite a run. They have won four straight games and six of their last seven games. Phoenix is 7-1-2 in their last 10 games and is coming off an impressive 6-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.
The Coyotes offense has been superb! They have scored 19 goals during their four game win streak. Ray Whitney has five points in his last two games, Lauri Korpikoski has six points in four and Lee Stempniak has three points in two.
Ilya Bryzgalov has shaken a slump and is at the top of his game once again for Phoenix. The Coyotes rely on him and his strong play is has resulted in Phoenix’s recent streak. Bryzgalov is 4-0-0 in his last four games with a 2.00 goals against average.
Betting Prediction: The San Jose Sharks are 11-9-2 on the road this season and have lost six of their last seven games overall. The Phoenix Coyotes are 10-5-5 at home this season and have won six of their last seven games overall. The home team is 11-5 in their last 16 games overall.
The Phoenix Coyotes are hitting on all cylinders both offensively and defensively. The Sharks have been brutal of late. The Coyotes know that a victory on Monday would create some more space between them and the Sharks. Confidence will prevail on Monday and the Sharks will be left searching for answers once again.
