If you are not forced to sit through the Leafs/Sabres game, chances are that you will be stuck with an even worse matchup – the Sens vs. the Isles. Both teams have gone into a complete nose dive with only one team actually having something to look forward to.
The Ottawa Senators have been the worst team in the NHL over the past month and their skid has coincided with the loss of Jason Spezza. The Sens are 1-10-4 since Spezza went down with a shoulder injury – not good! Spezza hopes to return on Saturday night to the delight of the 16 remaining Senators fans!
Ottawa has the 29th ranked offense in the NHL (2.2 goals per game). Spezza will certainly help a unit that has had some players actually show signs of life as of late. Alex Kovalev has four points in two games, Peter Regin has three points in two games and Milan Michalek has two points in two games – both games were losses for Ottawa!
The Sens are the 28th ranked defense in the NHL (3.2 goals per game). Goaltending has certainly been an issue – neither goaltender has a goals against average of under 4.00 in their last three starts!
The Islanders have not been much better. They are dead last in the Eastern Conference, three points behind the Senators. They are 3-7 in their last 10 games after looking somewhat respectable only a couple of weeks ago. Since a decent stretch, the Isles are 3-8-1 and have lost four of their last five games overall.
New York has the 28th ranked offense in the NHL – 2.4 goals per game. They have some young talent on the team but none is exactly lighting it up. Michael Grabner has been the best Islander with 10 points in his last 10 games, Kyle Okposo has returned from injury and has recorded three points in two games and John Tavares has two points in two games.
Rick Dipietro got his clock cleaned in a fight with Brent Johnson the other night – hilarious – check it out if you haven’t seen it!! Kevin Poulin (3-2-1 with a 2.36 goals against average) will start in net!
Betting Prediction: The Ottawa Senators are 8-12-4 on the roads this season are 4-15 on Saturday nights this season but are 6-1 in the last seven games against the Islanders. The New York Islanders are 8-12-4 at home this season.
This game is tough to call – both teams are playing so badly. Let’s give the Senators the slight edge in hopes that they rally behind the return of their offensive leader. Spezza to the rescue?
