The best Canadian team in the NHL meets the worst Canadian team on Monday night when the Vancouver Canucks host the hapless Ottawa Senators. Two streaks are on the line Monday night – Vancouver has won five straight and the Senators have lost nine straight! Can you say mismatch?

Ottawa is an embarrassment – nothing has gone right for them at all this season. They are near the bottom of the league both offensively and defensively. Unfortunately for the Sens, just competing will be their goal for the rest of the season.

Ottawa currently ranks 29th in the NHL in offense (a measly 2.2 goals per game). Although Alex Kovalev has woken up (four points in two games), Peter Regin has four points in two games and Milan Michalek has two points in two games, their struggles are no better demonstrated than the fact that a defenseman is their hottest offensive player. Chris Campoli has five points in his last two games – five more points than the Sens most dynamic offensive threat Jason Spezza has!

It doesn’t matter who starts in goal for the 28th ranked defense (3.2 goals per game). Robin Lehner is 0-1-0 with a 4.33 goals against average in his last two games and Brian Elliot is 0-2-1 in his last five starts with a brutal 5.16 goals against average.

The Vancouver Canucks are the best team in the NHL and are absolutely lethal at home. The Canucks have won five straight games and have not lost in regulation at home since Dec. 8 (10-0-4). They are top three in the NHL in both offense and defense and are a handful for even the best of NHL teams.

Vancouver is the second best scoring team in the NHL (3.3 goals per game). The Sedins have been hot as per usual – Daniel has five points in three games and Henrik has three points in two games. Secondary scoring has risen up once again as well! Along with Ryan Kesler, Michael Samuelsson has become one of the hotter players in the league with six points in three games.

The Canucks are third in the league in goals against (2.3 goals per game).  The defense is deep and it is very talented while the goaltending has been absolutely superb. Roberto Luongo is 14-0-5 in his last 19 starts with a goals against average under two. Lou may sit in favor of Corey Schneider who is 2-2-0 in his last four with a 1.76 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: The Ottawa Senators are 8-13-4 on the road this season and are 18-40 in their last 58 games overall. The Canucks are 18-3-5 at home this season, are 10-0-4 in their last 14 home games and are 20-7 in their last 27 games overall. Vancouver is 6-0-1 in their last seven games against Ottawa.

Simply put, Vancouver is an elite squad that should handle the Sens with ease. A loss is not an option. Take the home side in a high scoring game.

Pick: Vancouver Canucks -250 and the Over – 5.5 goals
