It is do or die time for the Toronto Maple Leafs again! On Tuesday night, the Leafs get a chance to make up some ground against the team they need to overtake in order to qualify for the playoffs – the Buffalo Sabres. The problem – the Sabres have gone on a run and now sit seven points up on Toronto and the Leafs only have six games left!

Buffalo, surprisingly had not won three straight games since early February before their 2-0 win on Saturday versus the New Jersey Devils. The Sabres are 4-0-1 in their last five games overall and now not only have a playoff position within their grasp but they also have designs on catching New York and Montreal to better their Eastern Conference ranking.

Buffalo had been getting by on an offense that is currently ranked 7th in the NHL. Thomas Vanek has been superb this season, Jason Pominville and Drew each have three points in two games and Nathan Gerbe has six goals in his last seven games.

It has been the play of Ryan Miller however that has changed this team around. He was just named NHL First Star of the Week on the heels of going 3-0-0 with a 0.67 goals against average last week. He is 4-0-1 in his last five and has given up two or fewer goals in five of his last six games.

The Maple Leafs are hanging by a thread but even in missing the playoffs, the Leafs can be proud of their accomplishments. If James Reimer was in goal all season long, things may have been different for this team! If the offense was producing like it has in the last six weeks of the season, Toronto would have been the most improbable Eastern Conference playoff teams in years.

Surprisingly, there are three Leafs that are on pace for 30 goals – shocking if you look at their lineup. Phil Kessel, despite being wildly inconsistent is a decent cornerstone while Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski have been pleasant surprises. The Leafs offense has climbed from the cellar to 23rd in the NHL – not too bad.

James Reimer has been the difference for the Leafs and he is the sole reason for all of the optimism in Leafs land. He is an average 1-1-0 in his last two starts with a 3.02 goals against average but is much better than those numbers indicate.

Betting Prediction: The Buffalo Sabres have been very good on the road this season and are 11-4 in their last 15 away from home. They are 9-2 in their last 11 trips to Toronto. The Leafs are just an average home team.

Buffalo finally has some breathing room and fears are that they will take the gas off the pedal down the stretch. With Jordan Leopold out for the Sabres, I expect the Leafs to be a handful. Desperation looks good on the Leafs!

Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs -105
