In a heated battle for potential playoff positioning, the Buffalo Sabres will try to pull even with the Carolina Hurricanes for eighth place in the East as the two take to the ice on a heavy night of NHL Betting action Thursday. The Sabres currently sit two points back of the Canes and have two games in hand – Buffalo is only three points out of seventh place and they have three games in hand over the New York Rangers.

Buffalo’s new ownership group has made it clear that they want to win and with that in mind they went out and got former 40+ goal man Brad Boyes at the trade deadline, a move that paid immediate dividends in Buffalo’s 3-2 win over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night. Buffalo has gone 5-3-2 in their last 10 games and as mentioned are knocking on the door of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Buffalo currently owns the 12th ranked offense in the NHL with an average of 2.8 goals scored per game. The addition of Brad Boyes could elevate this team into the top 10 before too long! Drew Stafford has led the way with 14 points in his last 12 games, Johan Hecht has four points in four games and defenseman Andrej Sekara has registered four points in his last two games. Buffalo has Tim Connolly, Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville mired in mini-slumps at the moment – when they catch fire, look out!

The Sabres are an unflattering 18th in the NHL is goals against but Ryan Miller has been a beast in the last couple of weeks. Although he is just 3-3-1 in his last seven starts, Miller has failed to give up more than two goals in those games. He is 3-0-1 in his last four games with a 1.72 goals against average.

The Carolina Hurricanes are clinging to eighth place in the Eastern Conference but their recent play suggests that their stay in the Eastern Conference playoff picture could be slipping away. They are just 4-4-2 in their last 10 games. They did win their last game against Florida but they were outshot 42-22 in that game.

Carolina owns the 8th best offense in the league with an average of just over 2.8 goals for per game. They certainly aren’t lighting the lamp lately however – newly acquired Cory Stillman has three points in two games and Erik Cole and Jussi Jokinen have each registered two points in two games. The team will need more production from Eric Staal who should be fine after sustaining an injury last week and from super-rookie Jeff Skinner who has gone into hiding in the last week or so.

The Carolina Hurricanes are another team that boasts a world class goaltender but is a disappointing defensive team. The Canes are 23rd in the NHL and give up an average of 3.0 goals per game. Cam Ward was a beast against Florida and in his last three starts is 2-1-0 with a 2.02 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: The Buffalo Sabres are 16-10-4 on the road this season and have won four straight away from home. The Carolina Hurricanes are 17-10-3 at home this season and are 9-4 in their last 13 on home ice. The home team is 10-4 in the last 14 games in the series.

The Buffalo Sabres can smell eighth place while the Carolina Hurricanes appear to be doing their best to give it up to them. Carolina is playing better in both ends of the rink right now and with Ryan Miller rounding into form; they will be a tough match for any of their Eastern Conference foes in the last 20 games.

Pick: Buffalo Sabres +110
