The powerhouse Red Wings have owned San Jose in recent regular season play, having taken three of four meetings last year. However, if you include their playoff series last year, San Jose has actually won five of its last six meetings with Detroit. So you can bet the Red Wings will be hungry for revenge tonight.
The Wings are really rolling right now. They’ve won seven of 10 and beaten some of the league’s hottest teams over that span, including Columbus (twice) and Phoenix. Depth is once again key to their success. They’re the second highest scoring team in the league but have no player with more than 10 goals; seven Wings have at least five goals, however.
The Sharks haven’t been bad by any means but they haven’t dominated the regular season as we’ve seen them do so often over the last decade. They’re allowing more goals than they usually do and their Big Three – Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau – have been good but not great,
San Jose doesn’t enter tonight’s game with a ton of momentum. The Sharks have lost four of six and one of their wins over that span was over lowly Edmonton. They also got embarrassed 6-1 against Vancouver on Friday. The Wings are playing better hockey right now and should be better prepared for this high-profile matchup.
