Time is certainly running out on the Carolina Hurricanes, They have three games left with one being Wednesday against a finally healthy Detroit Red Wings squad. The Canes have three points to make up on the Buffalo Sabres and four on the New York Rangers. The Wings also have some work to do before the end of the season – they have slipped one point behind the San Jose Sharks for second place in the Western Conference.

Detroit has gone 5-3-2 in their last 10 games overall and has won two straight. It is no coincidence that their two game streak has coincided with the return of Pavel Datsuyk and Jimmy Howard to the lineup. Detroit is a much different team when they are healthy!

The Wings have maintained their Top 5 offense throughout the season. They are deep and they are talented throughout. Henrik Zetterberg has continued to lead the way while Justin Abdelkader and Johan Franzen have picked up their play of late. Juri Hudler is pointless in three games, Dan Cleary has just one point in five games and Pavel Datsuyk is working himself back into shape. Once the stars align, the Wings will be a force again!

Jimmy Howard returned to the Wings lineup two games ago and since then has gone 2-0-0 with a 2.44 goals against average. He will look to continue his hot play on Wednesday night.

The Carolina Hurricanes need regulation wins – any loss would be a virtual death blow to the squad. They have been playing quite well but have come up short against teams that they need to beat – an example is their 2-1 loss in their last outing to the team that they are chasing, Buffalo. Still, the Canes are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and are on the outside looking in.

Carolina, like the Wings has a good offense. Eric Staal has three points in his last two games (although he has just two assists in his last six games against Detroit), Tuomo Ruutu has four points in four games, Eric Cole is hot and Jeff Skinner has continued to be a great surprise in Raleigh.

Cam Ward will get the start in goal on Wednesday and is the reason that the Canes have hung around the playoff picture. Ward is 3-0-1 in his last four starts with a 1.94 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: The Detroit red Wings have absolutely owned the Hurricanes in the last few seasons. They are 14-3-1 in their last 18 games overall against the Hurricanes and are 6-2 in their last eight trips to Carolina. The Wings are an impressive 25-10-4 on the road this season. The Carolina Hurricanes are 21-13-5 at home this season, are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games overall but are just 2-9-1 in their last 12 games against Detroit.

The Wings are a veteran team that took their foot off the pedal last week and subsequently lost second place in the West. Mike Babcock will have this team primed on Wednesday night and with a healthy, full lineup the Wings should have their way. The Canes may have desperation on their side but the talent edge certainly goes to the Wings.

NHL Trends:

Over is 6-2 in DET last 8 vs. Eastern Conference.
DET are 115-42-11 in their last 168 Wed. games.
DET are 25-10-3 in their last 38 vs. Southeast.
CAR are 5-16 in their last 21 vs. Central.
