The Buffalo Sabres had a chance to put one of their pursuers out of their misery on Tuesday night but they failed to do so against the Leafs. Now they welcome the red-hot Rangers who sit directly above them in the standings – hoping to gain ground on seventh while creating some distance between them and ninth place Carolina.

The New York Rangers are finally starting to realize all of the potential that many felt this team has had. They have been remarkable of late going 8-1-1 in their last 10 games overall. Their strong overall play has taken them from playoff peril to a somewhat comfortable position in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Rangers have a fairly talented offense that has been largely inconsistent this season. When they are on, they can look amazing – when they are off, they look absolutely dreadful. Presently names like Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky have been doing their part and even Marion Gaborik is starting to shine.

The Rangers success is all about Henrik Lundqvist. He has started 24 straight games and is keeping the Rangers in each and every game. When Lundqvist is on like he is now, the Rangers are awfully tough to beat.

The Buffalo Sabres entered Tuesday’s contest on a hot streak – they had won three straight and had nearly closed the door on the Leafs season. But the Leafs managed to do it to Buffalo again and therefore stalled Buffalo’s climb up the Eastern Conference ladder.

Buffalo’s offense in ranked 7th in the NHL and scored around 2.9 goals per game – they scored three times on Tuesday. Drew Stafford, Jason Pominville and Nathan Gerbe continue their strong play and Thomas Vanek also hit the score sheet Tuesday. The Sabres have two solid lines that can do damage down the stretch.

Buffalo, like New York, has been riding a hot goaltender. Before letting four in on Tuesday, Ryan Miller was 3-0-0 on three starts with an incredible 0.67 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: The New York Rangers are a very respectable 23-13 on the road this season and have gone 8-1-1 in their last 10 games overall. The Buffalo Sabres are 18-16-4 at home this season.

This is a battle of two very good goaltenders – the score should be on the low side for sure. It is difficult to imagine the Sabres being able to slow the hottest team in the league down. The Rangers are rested, confident and ready to put a little breathing room between themselves and the pesky Sabres.

Pick: New York Rangers +105
