The suddenly desperate Montreal Canadiens host the refreshed Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night in a highly anticipated Eastern Conference showdown. Both teams have experienced hiccups over the past 10 games – Pittsburgh is 5-4-1 including a heartbreaking Winter Classic loss and Montreal is a dismal 3-6-1.
Pittsburgh looked like it was ready to go into a mid-season slide after a Winter Classic game that appeared to take all of the wind out of their sails. Wednesday night’s performance against the scorching Tampa Bay Lightning erased all of those thoughts. They defeated the Lightning 8-1 and did it largely without Sidney Crosby’s help (1 assist on the night).
The Montreal Canadiens are in a slump and have fallen to eighth place in the Eastern Conference because of it. There are three reasons why the Habs have struggled – they were on the road for an extended period, Mike Cammalleri has one point in his last four games and Carey Price is in a slump – a 0-1-1 record with a 4.14 goals against average in his last two games is just an example of his recent downturn.
Betting Prediction: The Penguins are back to their elite selves apparently and with a newfound secondary scoring touch, they will be a difficult task for any team going forward. Crosby and his band of French Canadian Penguins always get fired up for their visits to the Bell Center, I think they extend the Canadiens recent woes and come out with the victory on Thursday night.
