It’s quite a battle heading our way on Hockey Night in Canada! The 11th place team in the Eastern Conference, the Buffalo Sabres hosts the 12th place team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto will be looking to stretch their winning streak to three games while the Sabres will be looking to start a steak of their own.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have to be happy about what they see in their upstart goaltender James Reimer! He is the buzz in Toronto and will get the start on Saturday. He has banished Jonas Gustafson to the mirrors and has possibly seized the number one role in Toronto. He is 5-3-0 on the season with a very good 1.96 goals against average and he is coming off a most impressive shutout of the Carolina Hurricanes. He is about the only reason for hope in Toronto – ya – I said it!
The Leafs are 26th in the league in goals for (2.5 per game). Nobody is consistently contributing offensively and their best player Phil Kessel hasn’t recorded a point in three games.
Oh Ya! They’ve won two game in a row!
The Buffalo Sabres have turned the corner and hopes in Sabres-land is that their resurgence isn’t too late. They are 6-4-0 in their last 10 games but are 9-4-1 in their last 14. The Sabres are getting healthier, they are scoring more goals and they are finally getting quality goaltending.
The Sabres have the 16th best goals for average in the NHL (2.7 goals per game). Tyler Ennis has nine points in his last seven games, Tomas Vanek has 10 points in eight games and Jason Pominville has eight points in seven games. The offense is coming around – middle of the pack is all they’ve needed since Ryan Miller came around.
The Sabers’ uptick has coincided with Ryan Miller’s turn around. After a slow start to the season there have been signs of the Miller that is widely considered one of the best in the world. He is 7-3-0 in his last 10 games overall with a 2.44 goals against average and against the Leafs, he is 11-1 with a 1.49 goals against averaged in his last 12 games.
Betting Prediction: The Toronto Maple Leafs are 9-14-1 on the road this season and are just 3-9 on Saturday Night. The Leafs are 8-24-2 in their last 34 trips to Buffalo. The Buffalo Sabres are 11-12-1 at home this season but are 6-0 in the last six home games against the Leafs.
The Sabres have absolutely owned the Leafs in recent games and I see the trend continuing. The Sabres are playing their best hockey of the season and despite the James Reimer factor, I’m a believer in the Buffalo Sabres.
