Two of the “Outsiders” in the Eastern Conference look to keep their playoff hopes alive on Wednesday night when the 11th place Leafs travel to Raleigh to take on the ninth place Hurricanes. Not only are these two teams similar in their desperate plight to earn a playoff spot, they are also similar in their unpredictability from night to night.

Toronto’s NHL Betting Jekyll and Hyde week continues with a road date with another team that they are in pursuit of. Toronto came up with an ultra-impressive victory against the Sabres on Saturday night, only to lay an egg in a 6-2 loss in their next game to a struggling Tampa Bay squad. The Leafs enter Wednesday’s game four points back of Carolina and six points back of Buffalo for eighth place in the East.

Toronto’s offense hasn’t been that bad down the stretch. Phil Kessel has 12 points in 10 games, Mikkhail Grabovski has been solid and Nikolai Kulemin has been consistent. Bad news for the Leafs came this week in the form of Colby Armstrong’s potentially season ending injury – an already thin forward corp. is about to get thinner!

The quality goaltending that the Leafs rode up the Eastern Conference standings appears to be a thing of the past. Suddenly James Reimer looks human – 1-3-1 in his last five games with a 4.42 goals against average.

Ahhh, the Carolina Hurricanes. It is quite amazing that this team continues to hang around the Eastern Conference playoff picture. They were outplayed Tuesday night but they got superb goaltending from Cam Ward again and also got the one goal that they needed to snap a four game losing streak. Despite the win against Buffalo, there has to be some concern about this team that has scored two or less goals in five straight games!

Obviously, with the lack of goal scoring, there is NOBODY in the hot column for the Hurricanes. They have now gone seven straight games without a power play goal. Against Columbus on Sunday, Carolina had nine power plays – four two-man advantaged and still failed to score! Brutal!

Thanks to Cam Ward, the Hurricanes have a chance to qualify for the post season. He has given up two or less goals in five of his last six games and is coming off a 40 save shutout of the Sabres on Tuesday night.

Betting Prediction: This is an absolutely critical game for the Leafs in particular. The Leafs are under .500 on the road and the Canes are under .500 at home. I like the rested Leafs in this game – the wheels have to fall off Cam Ward at some time and my guess is that it happens on Wednesday. Take the road tem to make things a bit more interesting in the East.

Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs +120
