The Los Angeles Kings will try to climb to within one point of the last Western Conference playoff position when they travel to Dallas to face a Stars team that won’t go away. Dallas has been playing well while the Kings haven’t looked anything like a Western Conference contender.
Los Angeles hits the road on Monday after what was a brutal home stand in which they mustered only four points in eight games. Hopes are that the road will be kind to the Kings – they play 13 of their next 16 away from Staples Center. Overall, the Kings are 3-7-0 in their last 10 games but they are coming off a win in their last game against Edmonton.
The Kings are 11th in the NHL in goals for, averaging 2.9 goals per game. Jaret Stoll is leading the way with five goals in his last five games, Marco Sturm is contributing after coming over from Boston and has five points in five games and Dustin Brown has two points in two games. Los Angeles needs to start a run and a good place to start is against the Pacific Division leader – Dallas.
Los Angeles is 8th in the NHL in goals against despite their goaltenders being mired in a major slump. Jonathan Quick, who should start on Monday, is 1-5-0 in his last six games with a 3.75 goals against average. Quick is 4-1-0 in his last five against Dallas with a 1.72 goals against average.
The Dallas Stars are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games and have won three straight games. The goaltending has returned to prominence and the offense has really picked up of late. The Stars are the most unlikely of Division leaders and don’t appear to be slowing down in the least.
The Stars are 13th in the NHL averaging 2.9 goals per game. During their 5-0-1 streak, the Stars have scored 23 goals and have given up just nine. Jamie Benn has five points in three games, Brad Richards has 10 points in six games, Mike Ribiero has three goals and seven assists in his last eight games and Loui Eriksson has a ten game point scoring streak in which he has one goal and ten assists.
Dallas owns the 7th best goals against average in the NHL and give up 2.6 goals per game. Kari Lehtonen is 4-0-1 in his last five starts with a 1.71 goals against average. However, he is 0-2-0 against Los Angeles this season with a 4.10 goals against average.
Betting Prediction: The Los Angeles Kings are 9-11-0 on the road this season and are 7-1-0 in their last eight games against Dallas. The Dallas Stars are 14-6-4 at home this season but are 0-7-1 in their last eight home games against the Kings.
The Kings looked pretty good on Saturday night but that was against the lowly Edmonton Oilers. The Dallas Stars offer up a completely different challenge. Despite LA’s recent dominance of the Dallas, I like the Stars to win their fourth straight on Monday night.
