It’s do or die time for the Calgary Flames as they head to San Jose to take on one of the hottest teams in the NHL over the last six weeks or so. The Flames have been playing well but not well enough down the stretch while the Sharks have been steadily ascending to the top of the Western Conference standings.

Calgary needs two points in every game from now on. They have played well in both games so far in their always difficult California road trip but they only have a single point in each of those games. Calgary is 4-4-2 in their last 10 games overall and are 1-2-2 in their last five. Not good enough!

Calgary’s offense has been up and down in the last week or so but the overall numbers don’t look that bad. Jarome Iginla has been stellar as per usual, Tom Kostopoulos has four points in three games and Rene Borque has five points in four games. Olli Jokinen scored against LA but he and other free agent signing Alex Tanguay have been virtually silent.

Mikka Kiprusoff was on quite a run a few weeks ago but since then he has cooled off significantly. He played well against LA but he was shelled in his previous game against Anaheim. Kipper is 1-1-1 with a 2.29 goals against average this season versus the Sharks.

Remember when San Jose looked like the flop of the year? All of that has been erased by an amazing 21-4-3 run that has them within striking distance of second place in the Western Conference. San Jose has gone 6-2-2 in their last 10 games and they have won three straight overall.

San Jose’s offense will get Dany Heatley back from suspension but it could be without Logan Couture. San Jose still boasts the hottest player in the league however – Joe Pavelski who has 11 points in his last four game! Everybody is contributing for San Jose making them a scary entity once again!

Antti Niemi continues to make the Hawks regret letting him go. He has been outstanding this season and in his last two starts he is 2-0-0 with a 2.51 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: The Calgary Flames are just a .500 team on the road this season, have lost five of their last six games overall and are just 2-6 in their last eight trips to San Jose. The San Jose Sharks are 20-11-5 at home this season and have won three straight overall. San Jose has gone 21-4-3 in their last 28 games overall and are 10-3 in their last 13 games on home ice.

The wind may just be out of the Flames sails. They have been playing desperate hockey for over a month and it looks like it is catching up to them. San Jose will roll in this game – it won’t be a huge payday but it will be a payday nonetheless!

Pick: San Jose Sharks -180 and the Over – 5.5 goals
