Two Northwest Division teams that are going in totally opposite directions meet on Monday night as part of a light NHL Betting schedule. The Calgary Flames have risen from the dead and are now legitimate playoff contenders while the Avalanche have absolutely lost their way and are suddenly the second worst team in the Western Conference.

The Calgary Flames have cooled off a tad but are still 7-1-2 in their last 10 games. An overtime loss to Anaheim on Friday followed by a loss in Vancouver on Saturday has them on the outside of the playoff picture looking in once again. Still, the Flames have only lost once in regulation in their last 11 games. A trip to the Pepsi Center may just help them get back on track.

Calgary has climbed to the 14th ranked offensive team in the NHL, averaging 2.8 goals per game.  Jarome Iginla has shaken early criticism and trade rumors and has five points in his last four games, Olli Jokinen looks good as well and has six points in four games and Curtis Glencross has five points in three games. A number of Flames are hot for the first time this season.

The Flames’ turnaround has as much to do with defense and goaltending as it does offense. Mikka Kiprusoff had a January to forget – two wins in the month and a goals against average north of four. Since that time, Kiprusoff has often looked like the best Flame on the ice. Nine goals surrendered in his last two starts have dented his February numbers, but all signs point to Kipper being over his slump.

What the hell has happened to the Colorado Avalanche? Not even the return of the second best Av ever (Joe Sakic is still the best don’t you think?) has sparked this team. Peter Forsberg is a minus two and has recorded no points in two games since his return. The Avalanche as a team are 1-9-0 in their last 10 games and have lost seven games in a row. Brutal!

Somehow, Colorado still owns the sixth best offense in the NHL (3.0 goals per game). But names like Kevin Porter (two points in two games) and David Jones (three points in two games) have supplanted Chris Stewart (no points in four games) and Paul Stastny (one point in six games) as the hottest offensive Avalanche. It’s no wonder that Colorado has lost seven straight!

Defense and goaltending continue to plague the Avalanche as well. They are dead last in the NHL in goals against – 3.3 goals per game. Craig Anderson has yet to find his form this season and Peter Budaj hasn’t been much better. It’s pretty hard to win when a defense is constantly letting you down!

Betting Prediction: The Calgary Flames are just 12-13-5 on the road this season but are 8-0-2 in their last 11 games overall. The Colorado Avalanche are 14-13-3 at home this season and have only won once in their last 10 games overall.

Everybody is beating up on the Colorado Avalanche at the moment but their streak has to stop some time! Believe it or not, I think that the losing ways come to an end Monday night. Calgary will be playing their third game in four nights and already looked tired toward the end on their Saturday tilt with Vancouver. Colorado is better than they’ve been playing and Calgary is not as good as they’ve been playing!

Pick: Colorado Avalanche -120
