The Washington Capitals play their third straight NHL Betting Heavyweight on Wednesday night- this time they travel to Detroit to take on the Wings. The Caps are the hottest team in the NHL having dispatched nine straight opponents. Detroit has been just OK but has won their last two games.

Washington started their impressive streak with uninspiring one-goal wins. Their last three wins in the streak have been impressive however. A 5-1 win over Edmonton was followed up with a 4-3 win over the defending champs which was followed up with a dominant win over the Canadiens on Tuesday night.

A new offensive threat has been born in Washington. Marcus Johansson has joined their first line in place of injured Nick Backstom and Jason Arnott. He scored twice Tuesday and now has a five points in his last four games. Alex Ovechkin is ripping it up as well – he has 18 points in his last four games. Although the offense has been good, it is the defense and goaltending that have been the difference.

Braden Holtby got his fifth straight win on Tuesday night – he has allowed just 1.20 goals per game over that span. Michael Neuvirth may give Holtby a rest on Wednesday however. All he’s done is go 4-0-0 with a 1.73 goals against average in his last four. Or, Seymon Varlamov could return from injury. Suffice to say, the Caps are in very good hands!

The Detroit Red Wings appear to have lost touch with the Vancouver Canucks but they do have to watch out for the San Jose Sharks who are four points back in the Conference and the Chicago Blackhawks who are six points back in the Central Division. Detroit needs to step up their game – they have gone just 4-4-2 in their last 10 games overall.

The Red Wings are still one of the best offensive teams in the NHL but a few of their reliable contributors have been brutal as of late. Henrik Zetterberg, Juri Hudler and Todd Bertuzzi have gone pointless in their last six games – seriously! Pavel Datsyuk has four points in two games, Darren Helm has four points in four games and Johan Franzen has three points in two games.

Goaltending has been seriously sporadic for the Wings, particularly during their rough patch in the last couple of weeks. However, Jimmy Howard appears to be over his funk and is 2-0-0 in his last two starts with a 1.94 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: The Washington Capitals are 19-12-3 on the road this season and have won six straight away from home. The Caps are 10-1 in their last 11 games overall. The Detroit Red Wings are 18-11-4 at home this season but are just a .500 team in their last 20 games on home ice.

I have been waiting for the wheels to fall off the capitals but it just hasn’t happened. Each victory is more and more impressive! Detroit has Washington’s number however – in the last 20 meetings, the Wings are 14-5-1.

Take the Wings to make a huge statement in this game and to cool the sizzling Caps.

Pick: Detroit Red Wings
