The Washington Capitals could catch the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference standings on Tuesday night as the two go head-to-head in the City of Brotherly Love. The problem – no Alex Ovechkin who has been ruled out with “nagging injuries”. Hmm! A marquee matchup will be without its marquee player.

Washington is absolutely scorching at the moment. They are 9-1-0 in their last 10 games and have gained second place in the Eastern Conference – within two points of Conference leading Philadelphia. Shutting down Ovechkin could be the difference between the Caps hoisting the Eastern Final or possibly being on the road!

Mike Knuble has been playing well. Alex Semin has five goals and six assists in six games against Philadelphia and Nick Backstrom has three goals and 13 assists in his last seven games against the Flyers – something tells me that the offensive fall off won’t be as great as you think.

And then there is the Caps goaltending. Braden Holtby was NHL First Star of the Week last week and he is playing backup! Michael Neuvirth is 5-1-0 with a 1.73 goals against average in his last six starts!

The Philadelphia Flyers seemed to be ho-humming along – their record in their last 10 games is 4-4-2. But the Flyers have been playing better of late. In their last six games, the Flyers are 4-0-2. They are still in the driver’s seat in the East but that seat is getting a little hotter.

Offensively the Flyers won’t have to worry. They are 4th in the NHL with an average of 3.2 goals per game. Both of the big lines are producing – Jeff Carter’s line has been good and Danny Briere’s line has been terrific as well. The Flyers are a handful for sure.

Is it just me or has the goaltending confidence on this club taken a bit of a nosedive. Not sure about the net keeping going forward.

Betting Prediction: The Philadelphia Flyers doldrums have coincided with Chris Pronger’s injury. This is a different club without Chris in the lineup – the Flyers are 13-5-3 this season without him. The Ovechkin loss is huge but I think the Pronger loss in this game will be even more of a factor. Take the underdog!

Pick: Washington Capitals +150
