The Vancouver Canucks visit the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night in what is unquestionable the “Game of the Night”. The Canucks come in into the game with a healthy lead in the Western Conference over second place Detroit – the Wings are basically relegated to fighting it out for second along with a powerful San Jose squad.
Vancouver lost Manny Malhota for the season and could be without Michael Sameulsson and Daniel Sedin – there are conflicting reports on whether Daniel will be available or not. It is three big omissions on a team that leads the league in offense, defense, power play and penalty killing!
Offensively, let’s hope that the deadline acquisitions – Max Lapierre and Chris Higgins can step up their game to keep the incredible offense going. Still, the Canucks are deep and they are talented and they still have one of the best goaltenders on the planet.
Roberto Luongo will start for Vancouver – he should be rested. The play of Corey Schneider (5-0-0 in his last five starts) has afforded Roberto with something that he hasn’t ever had – a few games off down the stretch. Expect Luongo to be at his best on Wednesday night.
The Detroit Red Wings sit only three points up on the charging San Jose Sharks and appear to be limping down the stretch. They are 4-3-3 in their last 10 games and now are faced with the prospect of playing the top team in the league without Pavel Datsuyk, Johan Franzen, Juri Hudler and Todd Bertuzzi.
Detroit’s second ranked offense will still have some talent in the lineup – Henrik Zetterberg and Valtteri Filppula each have four points in their last four games and Dan Cleary has three points in his last two.
Goaltending is another issue facing the Wings ahead of their Wednesday showdown. Jimmy Howard hasn’t been great and was pulled in his last game. Chris Osgood could return from injury and make his first start in forever – Vancouver isn’t exactly the team you wanna face in that situation.
Betting Prediction: The Vancouver Canucks have been great on the road this season – they have won five straight. The Wings on the other hand are a sub .500 home team in their last 22 games. However, Detroit is 17-4-3 in their last 23 home games against Vancouver and are 6-2 in the last 12 meetings overall.
The Detroit Red Wings are in for a long night on Wednesday. My guess is that Daniel does play and the Wings will simply be overmatched in this one. Detroit needs to be at full strength to beat this team and with the injuries the Wings have the Canucks will be hard to overcome.
