The New York Rangers continue their desperate fight to stay in the playoff picture when the host a team that has already clinched their division, the Boston Bruins. The Rangers have been playing well – they are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games overall but somehow still cling to eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Boston is cruising home with the third seed locked up in the East.
The Boston Bruins are closing out their season, a season in which they have consistently surprised everyone. They have maintained a top five offense all season (3.0 goals per game) and they have had a top one or two ranking in goals against average this season (2.3 goals per game). Boston is deep and talented.
Offensively, the Bruins have two tremendous lines that can light it up on any given night and it has two lines that are not immune to contribution themselves – that bring a physical level to a game. The Bruins are simply a nightmare to play against.
Tuukka Rask started Boston’s last game so Tim Thomas is likely to go Monday. He is 4-0-1 in his last five starts with a ridiculous 0.98 goals against average.
The Rangers need to keep winning – they are just two points up on Carolina and have fallen into a tenuous eighth place in the East. Here’s hoping that Henrik Lundqvist doesn’t break down – he is this team!
Offensively the Rangers are a disappointing 17th in the NHL. Young studs Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan have shown flashes this season but are maddeningly inconsistent. Nobody’s numbers particularly stand out for New York but they must be doing something right!
And that something is riding Henrik Lundqvist into the ground. He will likely see action again on Monday night after a stretch of being the “only man” standing between the pipes.
Betting Prediction: The Boston Bruins have been very good on the road this season but with the Northeast division sewn up, my fear is this team having an understandable lapse. The Rangers have not been that good a home club this season however and I think that is the difference in this game. Boson is just too good! Take even money!
