Don’t let that near .500 record of the Leafs fool you, this is one of the worst teams in the NHL right now with just three wins in their last 18 games.

The Coyotes haven’t really been wowing anyone lately either and have managed just two wins in the month of January for a 2-6-2 record in their last 10. Both teams come in riding seven game losing streaks. Buckle up for this one.

Coyotes

Where oh where do you find the positives with this team? Defenseman Keith Yandle is having another solid season in terms out points output with 30 in 47 games but is a miserable -22.

To make matters worse, Yandle’s 30 points stands as the second highest total on the team, just one point behind 32-year-old Antoine Vermette and three points up on 38-year-old Shane Doan.

Translation, there are no young stars coming through the pipeline and it’s going to be a long few years for the Coyotes.

In net things don’t get much better as the usually very steady Mike Smith has taken a big slide this season with a whopping 3.49 GAA and .889 SV%.

This Coyotes team has scored the fewest goals in the Western Conference (and third fewest in the NHL) and has allowed the second most goals in the NHL. Not scoring goals and allowing a lot to go into your own net is not a winning formula (just a hunch).

Maple Leafs

It’s almost become comedic how cliche this Leafs team has become. They storm out of the gate every year, go on a tear around November/December, and then come the new year they fall apart completely.

This season has been no different; after running off a 10-1-1 streak way back in December and closing to within two points of top spot in the Atlantic the Leafs have won just three of their last 18 games and have slid back to irrelevance, nine points out of the final wild card spot.

To those Leafs fans who were calling for Randy Carlyle to get canned, how’s that going?

Enter Peter Horachek and his brilliant plans to change the entire team philosophy and system…mid-season. Yep, that’s working out great for the team that has won just once under the new head coach and has managed just seven goals during this seven game losing streak while being shut out three times.

The offense has completely dried up under Horachek’s new system and the results are loss after loss.

At least with Carlyle at the helm this team could score themselves out of their defensive deficiencies, now they’re just a bad team playing the wrong system for the players that they have.

Coyotes vs. Maple Leafs 4* Free Pick

Two teams on seven game losing streaks.

Here’s a safe bet, one team will snap their losing streak tonight. But seriously, picking a winner in this one is almost a coin flip.

The Leafs looked in control last night against the Devils but Corey Schneider stone walled them en route to a shoot out loss for the Leafs.

Phoenix was better against a pretty weak Philly team last time out but were also downed in the shoot out.

I really don’t want to touch this one as far as picking a winner, but instead am leaning heavily towards the under when you consider you have one of the worst offenses in hockey in the Coyotes and a Leafs team that is averaging one goal per game over their last seven.

The Under is paying +102 and that’s where you should invest.
