Detroit Red Wings vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Picks & NHL Preview

Red Wings vs Blue Jackets NHL Spread/Handicapping

Wings Try To Avenge Opening Game Thrashing – In Columbus Monday Night

I know, I know – not the sexiest of matches to start the 2012 season but it is televised nationally in the US and Canada. I promise there will be more interesting matchups to come but I digress. The Wings certainly looked vulnerable in their opener – the omission of Nicklas Lidstrom and Thomas Holmstrom look like they are looming large.

They were thrashed 6-0 by the Blues Saturday. For the Jackets – they were an impressive winner in their first game – a 3-2 shootout win against Nashville.

Not much is expected in Columbus after the offseason departure of Rick Nash. But a win on Saturday gives this team a tiny bit of optimism going forward – they played well at Nashville and Sergei Bobrovsky looked like the best player on the ice.

Bobrovsky has a lot to prove this season and Saturday night was a good start.

The Jackets catch the Red Wings at precisely the right time Monday night – the Wings are learning to live without Lidstrom and Holmstrom and they are dealing with a number of key injuries to boot.

Darren Helm, Todd Bertuzzi and Patrick eaves are out Monday night – that’s five starters from last year’s team that is not going to be on the ice. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Add in the fact that Jimmy Howard allowed five goals on 27 shots and there is reason for concern in Detroit.

Pavel Datsuyk, Henrik Zetterberg and Nick Kronwall still exist but this team is thin! Could it be that the Wings string of 21 straight playoff appearances is at the start of a miserable end?

The Detroit Red Wings are not in the greatest situation right now at all. I’m not saying I love the Jackets – far from it. I’m just saying that you can’t expect w whole lot from the depleted Wings. Even the oddsmakers have their reservations about Detroit on Monday night – I can’t remember the last time they were just -126 against Columbus.

Take the home team to record a rare win over their Divisional Big Brother – success against Detroit won’t last long.

Columbus Blue Jackets +114
