Canadiens vs. Penguins Preview

The Montreal Canadiens. What can you say about this team? They will be playing their fourteenth game of the playoffs and their second Game 7 in as many series on Wednesday night in attempt to accomplish the impossible.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will have all the pressure square upon their shoulders in Game 7 and will be hoping that all of the playoff experience that they have gained over the past couple of seasons pays off.

The Montreal Canadiens thrilled their home town crowd on Monday night and have earned the right to hold their heads high no matter what happens in Game 7.

The Habs were forced to play without the man credited with shutting down Sidney Crosby in the series, Hal Gill, who took the pregame warm-up but couldn’t go because of a lacerated leg.

Still, the Canadiens came up with a spirited total team effort in their Game 6 win.

Mike Cammalleri continues his playoff tear scoring with two more goals on Monday to take the NHL lead with eleven post season goals.

Hal gill fill-in and previously injured Jaroslav Spacek returned to the lineup after a nine game absence and added a goal, and super-pest Maxim Laperriere tallied for the apparent team of destiny. The offense did its job once again and kept the Pens on their heel throughout.

The Canadiens defense was solid once again. Despite Jaroslav Halak giving up what seems to be the only weak goal of his playoff run, he was able to rebound and make 34 huge saves in the win.

The defensive corp. didn’t miss a beat with Gill’s absence and have to be confident going into Game 7.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have to be a little bit frightened. Despite Sidney Crosby’s first goal in his last seven games, the Pens were not able to sustain any pressure on the Habs.

The Canadiens are battling hard and it appears that the Penguins have no answer for Montreal’s determined play.

The Pittsburgh Penguins had 37 shots on Jaroslav Halak but were only to convert on three. Finishing scoring opportunities has become a far-too-common theme for Pittsburgh and if they can’t find a way to disrupt Jaroslav Halak or convert, they could be in trouble in Game 7.

Three hit goalposts in a five minute span during the second period didn’t help either. Did anyone see Evgeni Malkin on Monday night?

His play was disappointing considering his effort in Game 5.

Another rather disturbing trend for the Pittsburgh Penguins is Marc-Andre Fleury’s inconsistent play. He seems to have one good outing followed by a bad one. When he’s good, the Pens win. When he’s shaky, they lose.

Montreal has a lot of confidence going into Game 7 while the Penguins have the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Montreal knows what to expect by going into a hostile setting for a Game 7. One of the strangest stats that you will ever see is the Canadiens’ seven wins during this post season have come when they have been outshot by at least nine shots. If the Canadiens can somehow manage to get outshot in Game 7, they will be fine – weird!

The Hockey Gods obviously love the Habs and I do too in Game 7.
