Canadiens vs. Capitals Preview

Game 7 – anyone see this coming? The Washington Capitals have fallen victim to slow starts, a poor power play and a hot goaltender en route to a Game 7 showdown on Wednesday night.

The Caps are suddenly a team with a ton of pressure on it. A win on Wednesday would erase memories of their average playoff play while a loss would certainly put them in an unflattering playoff underachiever category alongside the San Jose Sharks.

The Washington Capitals can take a lot of blame for not ending this series earlier but they can also take some solace in knowing that they were the better team in Games 5 and 6, directing a total of 92 shots against the uber-hot Jaroslav Halak.

Washington needs better performances from their star offensive players in order to move on. In the three games that they have won in the series, Alex Ovechkin has four goals and four assists while in the three losses, Ovi has tallied a total of just one goal.

Pretty telling stat wouldn`t you say?

Alex Semin, a 40 goal man during the regular season still has only one assist in the six games of the series despite a Game 6 effort in which he directed seven shots on goal. The number one ranked regular season power play is 1 for 30 in the six games so far in the playoffs.

The defense has been suspect in the last two games, allowing the Canadiens to win two straight games to even the series.

They have fallen behind early, staking the Habs to a 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes in each of the last two games. Goaltender Seymon Varlamov has been unspectacular and has given up seven goals in 49 shots in the last two games. Defenseman Tom Poti is out for the Caps which is a significant blow to Washington.

The Montreal Canadiens are peaking.

Mike Cammalleri has eased concerns about the pedestrian end to his regular season and now has recorded four goals and two assists in the last three games, Thomas Plekanec has been visible on the score sheet in all but one game so far and Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez are providing the Habs with the playoff experience that they were supposed to.

This series will be won or lost for the Canadiens because of one man – Jaroslav Halak. He has stopped 90 of the 92 shots directed at him during the Habs` two game winning streak.

He might be inside the heads of the Washington players who have thrown everything at him but have come up empty in the win column.

The first period of Game 7 will be crucial for both teams on Wednesday night. If the Habs can jump out to another early lead, the pressure on the Capitals might prove insurmountable. If the Caps somehow have a good start, it will force the Canadiens to play catch up, which is not exactly their strong suit.

It is hard to believe that the Washington Capitals opened at -330 (Now -290) on the Moneyline. Montreal is clearly the more well rounded and cohesive club right now.

The Capitals have the weight of the world on their shoulders and I think they collapse under it.

NHL Betting Trends:

Montreal is 3-6 SU in its last 9 games
Washington is 18-7 SU in its last 25 games at home
Washington is 8-4 SU in its last 12 games
The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Montreal’s last 9 games on the road

Pick: Montreal Canadiens in a huge upset
