Capitals vs. Canadiens Game 4 Preview

The Washington Capitals were unable to generate another third period comeback and eliminate the Montreal Canadiens at home on Saturday night. They did not play that badly, but they did not play that well either.

If you don’t believe me, take a gander at Coach Bruce Boudreau’s post game comments!

The Washington Capitals has a glorious chance to thrill their loyal home town fans on Saturday in an elimination game but now they have to travel to Montreal in attempts to end the series early and earn a little rest before their next series begins. The Washington Capitals got off to their far too common slow start on Saturday night and fell behind once again.

Unlike previous games, the Capitals were unable to come back in the third period to get a win over the quick-starting Canadiens.

The Caps have been led in the playoffs by the best player in the game, Alex Ovechkin.

If he’s not spraying a six year old kid with snow, he is scoring a huge goal when the team needs it the most. After being shut out in Game 1, Ovi has responded with at least one point in each of the last four games to the tune of five goals and four assists.

Nicklas Backstom and Mike Knuble have been solid in support.

Alex Semin has drawn the ire of his coach and it is well deserved.

Semin, one of the true weapons on the Caps roster has a measly one assist so far in the playoffs. The Caps power play is also struggling with only one goal in 24 chances in the series.

The Montreal Canadiens have earned another game at home and have done so with a total team effort. The regular season offensive leaders have been solid and have contributed regularly on the score sheet.

Mike Cammalleri, Thomas Plekanec and Brian Gionta have been great for the Canadiens, but the lack of a supporting cast could very well be the Habs downfall.

The Canadiens’ coaching staff tried to do what Washington did early on the series – change goaltenders to try to change momentum. Unlike the Caps experiment, Montreal’s experiment failed with Carey Price delivering a pedestrian effort. The Canadiens went back to Jaroslav Halak in Game 5 and the move paid off in spades.

He made 36 quality saves and was the reason that the Canadiens were able to extend the series.

Montreal might get their top defenseman Jaroslav Spacek back from illness on Monday which would definitely help in slowing down the intense Washington attack.

Montreal has played well but unfortunately their success depends more the play of the Washington Capitals rather than their own.

If the Caps can play a complete 60 minutes and if they can get their struggling power play going, the Canadiens will not have a chance.

If the Caps cannot put it all together, Jaroslav Halak could steal another game, but it’s highly unlikely.
