Penguins vs. Canadiens Game 6 Preview/Pick

The Montreal Canadiens have defied the odds all playoffs long and have lost some people some serious dough along the way. The Canadiens had possibly their best all around game of the series so far but lost 2-1 to fall behind 3-2 in the series. The scene shifts to the Bell Center in Montreal for Game 6 where the Habs are a miserable 1-9 in their last 10 home playoff games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins got back to the game plan that made them successful in the first game of the Conference semi-final series. Maybe it was the return of Bill Guerin to the lineup but the Pens were able to get people in front of Jaroslav Halak. Halak will rarely stop a shot that he can’t see. You can bet that the game plan will be the same in Game 6 , particularly with the possibility of enormous Canadiens’ defenseman Hal Gill possibly sitting out with a lower body injury.

In Round 1, it was Sidney Crosby who willed his team to victory. Since then he has really struggled and despite three assists in the series, he has not been able to score one yet. Engeni Malkin has finally woken up and was as dangerous as he has been in Game 5.

Success for the Pittsburgh Penguins hinges on the play of Marc-Andre Fleury. When he is good, like he was in Game 5, the Pens win. When he is shaky, Pittsburgh struggles. Which Fleury will show up on Monday night? – Your guess is as good as mine!

The Montreal Canadiens are like your pesky little brother. If they hand around long enough and are given enough chances, they are going to succeed sometimes. The 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs has seen the emergence of little brother.

Former Habs GM Bob Gainey took a lot of heat in the off season for the free agents that he brought in to Montreal. Mike Cammalleri has been superb, Brian Gionta has been as solid as a rock and Scott Gomez has added the veteran presence that is a successful needs. Kudos Bob, too bad you are not around to enjoy the culmination of your foresight.

The Montreal Canadiens played a pretty good road game on Saturday. Now Habs fans are hoping that recent trends at home don’t manifest themselves. There will be a huge hole on defense if Hal Gill is forced to sit out but word out of Montreal is that Andrei Markov and or Jaroslav Spacek could return to the lineup. Depth on defense is not something that the Habs are blesses with – any one of the three will be crucial if the Canadiens want to extend the series. Halak was fine and should continue to be so.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been playing with fire and the Washington series proved that fire will eventually burn. The Habs have been close in all of the games that they have lost and will be happy with the position that they are in. The pressure is still on the Pens in this game and I think that the Canadiens come out loose and thrill their home town crowd one last time this season. Game 7 anyone?
