Bruins vs. Sabres Preview

Game 4 of the series between Boston and Buffalo was quite a match. It took double overtime to settle the hard hitting affair. Goaltending as predicted was incredible as was the passion and pace in which the game was played.

With their backs against the wall, the Buffalo Sabres return home where they hope to stave off elimination and send a message to the Bruins that they still have some work to do.

The Boston Bruins of today are a far cry from the Bruins of even a month ago. Today’s Bruins were able to rally from a 2-0 deficit in Game 4 and win in overtime to gain a commanding 3-1 series lead.

The Bruins played a passionate physical game to delight of their home town fans and now sit poised to knock off the Eastern Conference third seed.

The Boston offense appears to be improving as the playoffs go on. Although they were only able to score three goals in four plus periods of Game four they had several quality chances that were denied by the stellar Ryan Miller. Patrice Bergeron led the way for the Boston Bruins with a goal and an assist while David Krejci tallied and Miroslav Satan scored the overtime winning goal.

Boston managed 37 shots against the Sabres, many of them quality scoring opportunities.

Defensively, the Bruins have been solid. Players like Derek Roy and Jason Pominville are being totally neutralized by Zdeno Chara and his supporting cast. When the Sabres do get a chance to score, Tuukka Rask has been there to shut the door.

The Buffalo Sabres really miss Thomas Vanek. They have been unable to score more than three goals in any game in the series.

Derek Roy, Jason Pominville, Paul Gaustad and Raffi Torres have been largely invisible in the series so far leaving the offensive onus on a committee that does not fit the goal scoring role all that well.

The Sabres did generate some shots in Game 4 and had many opportunities to score. But you have to bury your chances or face the prospects of another loss. The power play has yet to score as well – not good for a playoff team.

Outside of a Game 2 lapse, the Buffalo defense has been solid. Not only are they keeping the Bruins from penetrating their zone and scoring a lot of goals, they are also consistently on the score sheet.

Ryan Miller has been brilliant and certainly deserves better than a 1-3 record in the playoffs so far.

The Boston Bruins could eliminate the Sabres on Friday night but I do not think that Buffalo is ready to go quite yet. Thomas Vanek might return for Game 5 and that would be a huge boost.

Buffalo has played hard despite their results and I think they get rewarded for their hard work with another win on Friday.
