The Anaheim Ducks were the hottest team coming into this year’s NHL playoffs but they may have met their match against the detail oriented Nashville Predators. Nashville takes a 2-1 series lead into Wednesday night’s showdown in Nashville thanks to sound defense and a sudden and welcome offensive spike.
Anaheim’s offense has cooled off since the end of the regular season as evidenced by their lousy 16 shot effort in Game 3. With Bobby Ryan suspended, Ryan Getzlaf was held off the score sheet while Corey Perry continued to shine – he has one goal and four assists in his last two games. Teemu Selanne has looked like the best offensive Duck however as he collected two more goals in Game 3 to lead the team in the series. The Ducks will need to be better, obviously, and they would do themselves a great service by staying out of the penalty box – they have been short handed 16 times in the three games so far.
Jonas Hiller appears suffered a setback in his rehabilitation leaving the goaltending onus on Ray Emery who looked great in Games two and three. The offensively challenged Preds have generated 71 shots in the last two games against Emery and he has stopped 64 of them.
The Nashville Predators had a lot of trust in themselves ahead of this series but there is no way that they thought that they could get it done with their goaltender playing average hockey and with their offense being the difference maker. Nashville has scored 11 goals in the three games so far and Pekka Rinne has registered a 2.70 goals against average with a pedestrian .887 save percentage.
For Nashville, the offense has to keep doing what it has done – Mike Fisher is ties for the playoff lead in points and Martin Erat is starting to heat up. If the Preds can score three goals per game, Pekka Rinne should be able to do the rest.
Defense is the strength of Nashville but in the series so far it has let them down just a bit. Expect a better effort from Rinne and the defense – they are much, much better than they have been playing!

Bobby Ryan will sit out the second game of his two game suspension on Wednesday night leaving a big hole in the Ducks offense. Expect the Predators defense to finally show up and put the clamps down on the dangerous Ducks. Nashville is playing better hockey at the moment and is far more disciplined than the impatient Ducks.
