Coyotes vs. Red Wings Preview

Is there a more intriguing series in the NHL playoffs than this one? The Phoenix Coyotes and Detroit Red Wings continue their fascinating rivalry on Tuesday night with the Red Wings hoping to even the series and avoid a sequence of must win games in order to advance in the post season.

The Detroit Red Wings have played outstanding hockey so far in this year’s playoffs but it has only been in stretches.

During other stretches, the team has looked simply ordinary and vulnerable to the emotion that appears to be carrying the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Detroit offense has been OK in the playoffs so far. They have at least 30 shots on goal in each of the three games and have been getting quality outings from each of their offensive weapons.

Henrik Zetterberg had two more assists on Sunday, Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula each scored a goal while Todd Bertuzzi and Brad Stewart added assists on the two goals that the Red Wings managed. Patience is the key for this talented squad – the scoring will come as long as the pressure is sustained.

Goaltending, although not terrible, certainly is not stealing any games for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard has been OK but not spectacular in the playoffs so far. He has allowed four goals in each of his last two outings and has a league worst 3.75 goals against average in the playoffs.

Giving up a goal 29 seconds into a game like he did on Sunday harms the team and shakes his own confidence. Howard will have to be better in Game 4 or the Wings might find themselves in quite a hole.

The Phoenix Coyotes continue to surprise. They are up 2-1 in the series and convincingly won a game in the always tough Joe Louis Arena. They Coyotes are playing a complete game with all ten forwards, seven defensemen and goaltender doing their part each and every night.

So who were the offensive stars in Game 3? I forgive you if you don`t recognize the names. Petr Prucha and Radim Vrbata each tallied a goal and an assist, Martin Hanzal and Matthew Lombardi each had two assists while Wojtek Wolski scored in his third straight game and Sam Lepisto added a goal.

It’s a Phoenix smorgasbord of offensive contributors indeed!

Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov bounced back from his Game 2 hiccup and made 29 saves in Game 3. He is still the most important figure on the Coyotes team – if he has an off game, they Coyotes likely won`t be successful.

Note: Injured Shane Doan looks good to go after a scare on Sunday.

Game 4 is almost a must win for the Detroit Red Wings. This is a franchise with a refuse to lose attitude and I think that desperation will suit the Wings just fine.

Look for a solid effort from the Wings and a win to even this most intriguing series.
