Sharks vs. Red Wings Preview

The name Joe is far too common in this series. The San Jose will ride the hot play of Joe Pavelski and his four goals and two assists in two games, and Joe Thornton, who scored his first goal of the post season into Joe Louis Arena for Game 3 of their Conference semi-final series.

The San Jose Sharks have to be feeling that they have already gotten the playoff monkey off of their backs with their two wins to start the second round series. Secondary scoring you ask? The line of Pavelski, Clowe and Setoguchi are responsible for six of the eight goals that the Sharks have scored in the series so far.

The Sharks have now won five straight playoff games and are on a streak unmatched by any other team in the playoffs so far.

The offense has been good, generating 72 shots so far against the Red Wings. The story in Game 1 was the Sharks’ quick strike offense that scored three times in 1.19 while the story in Game 2 was the power play that had ten chances to Detroit’s four. The Sharks scored on one of the two five-on-threes that they had in Game 2.

The defense has been good so far as well. Although they have given up three goals in each of the first two games, they have somehow kept Henrik Zetterberg and Valtteri Filppula off of the score sheet.

Evgeni Nabokov has been responsible for numerous game saving stops and although he hasn’t been spectacular, he’s been good.

The Detroit Red Wings will return home for the first time in over a week on Tuesday night and should be refreshed. Although there was little sign of fatigue in San Jose, the Wings must have been tired after a tough seven game series against Phoenix and after two games in the daunting Shark Tank.

Detroit goes home down 2-0 but they have to be feeling that they could have easily won one of the two games in San Jose.

Pavel Datsyuk has been by far the best Detroit forward and if they can somehow re-ignite Henrik Zetterberg, Valtteri Filppula and Todd Bertuzzi, they will be just fine.

Goaltender Jimmy Howard was the biggest question mark for the Red Wings going into the second round.

After a shaky Game 1, Howard responded with a 41 save effort in Game 2, putting to rest all of the Hockeytown chirping about his effectiveness.

The Red Wings will be buoyed by their pumped up home town crowd on Tuesday night. They are a seasoned team that has been in almost every situation imaginable in the post season over the past few years.

If any team can rebound, it is the Detroit Red Wings. I expect Coach Mike Babcock and crew to make necessary adjustments and the Wings to put forth their best effort of the series.

This series is about to heat up!
