Blackhawks vs. Flyers Game Three Preview

Two games of the Stanley Cup Finals are in the books. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane have still not registered a point and the Chicago Blackhawks lead 2-0? It’s true. The Chicago Blackhawks have managed to win an offensive showdown and a defensive battle so far and will now head to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4.

The Chicago Blackhawks are a complete team. When one aspect of the game is lacking, the other parts seem to step up and make up the difference.

In Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, it was the offense that bailed out the defense and goaltending while in Game 2 it was the goaltending that made two goals stand up.

The Hawks now travel to Philadelphia with a seven game road winning streak on the line. The Hawks have also won seven games in a row overall. Marion Hossa finally got his first goal of the playoffs in Game 2 and nobody deserved a goal in the series more than him.

Ben Eager also chipped in for a Chicago team that has been riding the wave of secondary scoring throughout the Final. Toews, Kane and Byfuglien have to get it going at some point don’t they?
Antti Niemi shook off a poor Game 1 effort and was really the story in Game 2.

Chicago Blackhawks fans can breathe knowing that the goaltending appears to have righted itself and that Niemi is just fine. Blocked shots and quick transition out of the zone also helped Niemi.

The defense tightened up as predicted.

The Philadelphia Flyers deserve high marks for their play in the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final.

They played hard, never gave up and could have won either of the first two games with a little luck. The Big Line finally got their first points of the series in the third period, but that was all for the scoring for the Flyers. They were unable to solve Antti Niemi after that despite carrying the play for parts of the second and most of the third periods.

Dan Carcillo – meathead extraordinaire was effective by annoying in a pesky younger brother sort of way. Credit Coach Peter Laviolette with knowing exactly how to use Carcillo and when to sit him down (Carcillo did not have a shift in the last six minutes of the game).

Michael Leighton responded to a bad Game 1, just like Antti Niemi and had a strong game.

A wrist shot from the Blue Line by Ben Eager was the only mistake made and unfortunately, it turned out to be costly. The defense shut down the Top Line and kept the secondary scorers from making much of an impact as well. Defensively, the Flyers played a pretty good Game 2 but were foiled once again.

The Philadelphia Flyers surely deserve a better fate than a 2-0 series deficit. Home Ice will be a welcome sight for Philadelphia who have lost just once this post season.

Hockey karma has not been good to the Flyers just yet but it should turn around in Philadelphia. This series is closer than the 2-0 score indicates.

Philadelphia gets the win Wednesday and tightens up this very entertaining series.
