Red Wings vs. Sharks Preview

The San Jose Sharks were able to take a 1-0 series lead in the Western Conference semi-final and managed to do it without Patrick Marleau. In Game 1 the Sharks actually got a decent effort from their top line – or should I say second line of Thornton and Heatley.

It was the second line, or should I say first line for San Jose that was the difference Thursday night.

The Detroit Red Wings were expected to be a tired bunch after their seven game series with the Phoenix Coyotes ended on Thursday night. Fatigue was not a factor, but a huge lapse was. The Wings gave up three goals in a 1.19 minute span, and that was all that was needed for the Sharks to gain the upper hand in the series.

Goaltender Jimmy Howard gave up four goals on 27 shots but cannot be faulted on any of the Sharks’ tallies.

He was OK, the defense was decent but some offensive stars were absent for the first time in the playoffs.

Henrik Zetterberg and Thomas Holmstrom were held off the score sheet – and you were wondering why the Wings lost?

Stop the presses! The San Jose Sharks have an early lead in a playoff series!!

Let’s be honest thought, the Red Wings were ripe for the picking on Thursday night but still made the Sharks earn their victory.

As mentioned, Patrick Marleau sat and watched his line mates actually have a decent game. Dany Heatley scored his first goal of the playoffs and added an assist and Joe Thornton recorded one assist.

It’s a good thing for quality second lines! Pavelski, Setoguchi and Clowe were responsible for ¾ of the Sharks scoring on Thursday night with Joe Pavelski netting two goals and adding an assist and Devin Setoguchi chipping in with a goal.

If the number one line starts playing like the number one line, the Sharks could be dangerous going forward.

The Sharks took full advantage of a Detroit team that did not have a whole lot of time to prepare for their second round series.

With one game under their belts, I have faith in Mike Babcock and his coaching staff to develop a game plan and to get his boys ready for Game 2. The Wings have been in every playoff position imaginable and will not be intimidated by a 1-0 series deficit.

Expect a better effort from the Wings on Sunday and expect an even series when the series moves to Detroit.
