Canadiens vs. Capitals Preview

For those of you who laid some money on the Canadiens in Game 1 – Congratulations! Montreal did the improbable and beat the Washington Capitals at home.

Full marks for their guts, determination and their utter lack of concern about who their opponent was. Game 1 really does speak to the parity across the league and it reminds us fans why they play the games!

The Montreal Canadiens had a game plan and Coach Claude Julien’s squad executed that game plan to perfection. Pressure speed and more pressure were used to keep the Capitals off balance all night. They were able to close the gaps, closely check and keep the Capitals skill from getting going.

The Canadiens were led offensively by the players that were supposed to lead them. Mike Cammalleri scored his first goal since returning from injury ten games ago, Thomas Plekanek scored and so did Scott Gomez – a good sign for a Montreal team that was offensively challenged down the stretch.

Defensively, the Canadiens were brilliant in holding the highest scoring team in the NHL to two goals.

Game 1 was one of those games that goaltender Jaroslav Halak was able to steal. He made 45 saves, many of them spectacular and was the reason that the Canadiens were able to take a 1-0 series lead.

We all knew that he would single handedly win a game or two for Montreal and Game 1 appears to be one of those games.

The Washington Capitals, to a man were very disappointed with their Game 1 performance. It was not a great effort for a team that dominated from wire to wire during the regular season. They did direct 47 shots at Jaroslav Halak but the team’s best players appeared stuck in the sand.

Credit the Montreal defense for neutralizing the potent Caps attack, but 0 points and 0 shots on goal from Alex Ovechkin is simply inexcusable. Nicklas Backstrom was the only one of the Washington superstars who showed up on the score sheet. Defensively, the Caps mostly did their jobs and gave the team a legitimate chance to win.

Jose Theodore was fine and definitely was not the reason for the loss.

Game 1 was truly shocking. The Canadiens executed their game plan and the Capitals didn’t. That was the story of the game. Expect a better Washington team to show up on Saturday night and to repay all of those who put money on them to win Game 1.

If the Canadiens can somehow duplicate their Thursday performance, Coach Claude Julien should be next mayor of Montreal.
