Flyers vs. Bruins Preview
One of the most unforeseen second round playoff matchups produced probably the best Game 1 of the playoffs so far. The Bruins blew two separate two goal leads but prevailed in the end with a goal from Marc Savard, who returned to the lineup after sustaining his 15th concussion during the regular season.
Game 2 goes Monday night and if the Bruins continue to be the offensive juggernaut that they were in Game 1, the Flyers might have a difficult time keeping up.
The Philadelphia Flyers are playing shorthanded, no ifs ands or buts. However, they did play very well in Game 1 and they gave themselves something to build on going forward.
Mike Richards continued his strong play with one goal and two assists, Daniele Briere finally woke up with a goal and an assist, Chris Pronger matched Briere’s output and Ryan Parent added a third line goal.
The Philadelphia Flyers were able to do in one game what the Buffalo Sabres were unable to do just once in six games – score four goals against Tuukka Rask.
The Flyers fell victim to the Bruins’ newfound offensive prowess and allowed 46 shots on goal and five goals. The Flyers have to hope that the offensive output in Game 1 is an aberration – the Bruins’ strong suit has been their goals against average, not their goal scoring ability.
Brian Boucher is getting a lot of flak for allowing five goals in Game 1, but in fairness, he did stop 41 shots.
Has anyone seen the real Boston Bruins? They were supposed to be steamrolled by the Buffalo Sabres and were supposed eek out low scoring wins in order to be successful. Saturday’s five goal output was a surprise and a welcome sight to Bruins fans. Miroslav Satan has been a revelation and Patrice Bergeron has been an unquestioned leader that is necessary for a post season team.
Marc Savard’s return to the lineup adds to the chemistry of the team and a much needed scoring element for the suddenly cohesive Boston Bruins.
Tuukka Rask was not superb in Game 1 and the Bruins still won. He will be a factor in the series yet and with Boston suddenly scoring goals, it is difficult to imagine that they can lose a seven game series.
Boston has won every game that they have played at home so far in the playoffs and I expect their winning ways to continue on home ice Monday night.
