Bruins vs. Sabres Preview
If Game 1 of the Boston Buffalo series is any indication of what this series will bring, viewers are in for quite a treat. There was goaltending, of course, hits, shots, scraps and blood. The only thing that was lacking was an abundance of goals.
The Boston Bruins brought their 30th ranked offense into this game expecting to have a tough night against the planet’s best goaltender and they were right. The Bruins were able to fire 39 shots at Miller but were only able to score once. The Bruins seem to match up well against the Sabres as evidenced by their 4-2 regular season series record, but they, like most, had a difficult time solving Ryan Miller.
Boston’s best offensive players did not show up at all in this game. David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron each had only one shot on goal in the contest and defensive giant Zdeno Chara was on the ice for both of the Sabres goals.
Goaltender Tuukka Rask was solid as usual. Although the Bruins played a good game in the opener, there is a lot of room for improvement.
The Buffalo Sabres had to be feeling good going into Game 1. Offensive threats Thomas Vanek, Tim Connolly and Raffi Torres were back from injury and ready to ignite the Sabres offense. Ryan Miller recorded a .947 save percentage with a 1.71 goals against average in his last four starts. The stars were aligning for the Eastern Conference second seed.
Both of these factors played a part in the Sabres’ victory on Thursday night. Vanek scored a goal and Ryan Miller was…well…..Ryan Miller. He stopped 38 shots and helped Buffalo weather a second period storm in which they were outshot 24-8.
This series appears to be going as scripted and nothing in Game 1 suggests that the series won’t be highly contested and low scoring. Expect the better team to once again prevail on Saturday in yet another low scoring game.
