Two teams that will be fighting until the end meet in Vancouver Tuesday night when the San Jose Sharks who are just 3-7-1 in their last 10 games visit the Vancouver Canucks who have won three of their last four games and are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games overall.

The Canucks sit just five points ahead of San Jose in the Western Conference standings and will be out to stop San Jose’s six game win streak at Rogers Arena.

The Sharks played last night and posted an impressive 4-0 win at home versus Montreal while Vancouver was last seen Sunday in a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Blues.

The San Jose Sharks had not looked good before their win Monday night – they had lost three straight games on home ice and had little emotion in all of those games. But the NHL trade deadline seemed to shake things up a bit – right wing Ben Smith, who was acquired earlier in the day from the Chicago Blackhawks, scored and had an assist in his Sharks debut last night and seemed to provide a spark for the team.

The Sharks continue to be OK offensively – they average 2.77 goals per game. Joe Pavelski has three points in two games, Matt Irwin and Patrick Marleau each have three points in three games and Brent Burns and Tommy Wingels each have two points in two. The addition of Smith could be just what the doctor ordered for this team – that is unless the defense and goaltending continue to let the Sharks down.

Antti Niemi figures to get he start between the pipes Tuesday night largely because he is an impressive 11-2-0 with a 1.87 GAA in his last 13 against Vancouver, including the playoffs. He has hardly been reliable lately however – is 2-6-1 with a 3.13 goals-against average in his last nine straight games overall.

The Vancouver Canucks saw little need to upset the chemistry in the room on trade deadline day – they made a few minor moves but largely stayed with what has gotten them to this points. The team has won three of their last four games including a win last time out against a very good Blues team.

The Canucks will once again be without Ryan Miller – Eddie Lack will get the start in goal. He hasn’t been stealing any games for the Canucks but is getting wins. Lack is 2-1 since taking over the starter’s job but is 1-1-0 in his last two with a 4.84 GAA and unflattering .839 save percentage.

It’s a good thing for an offense that appears to be peeking at just the right time.

Captain Henrik Sedin has collected four goals and seven assists during his seven-game point streak, Daniel has seven points in six games, Radim Vrbata has four points in four games, Jannik Hansen has nine points in nine games, Ronalds Kenins has six points in six games and Dan Hamhuis has three points in three games.

Balance is the key for Vancouver’s success. They are getting it now and maintaining a tenuous playoff position because of it.

There is no time to admire their work however – San Jose is on Vancouver’s heels and has traditionally played the Canucks very tough.

The play here is the Over – 5 goals will be scored in this game for sure. Antti Niemi and Eddie Lack have been very generous lately and each offense in this game has been decent as well. 5 goals look like a gift to me!
