The Penguins enter having won six of their last seven games but are an almost unfathomable 0-9-1 in their last 10 games in San Jose. If the Pens are to break that streak it may be now – San Jose is just 4-6-0 in their last 10 games overall and 1-7-2 in their last 10 home games including a 3-2 loss against Vancouver Saturday night.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been climbing the Eastern Conference standings as of late – their midseason doldrums seem to be a thing of the past! They beat Anaheim at the Duck Pond on Friday night and beat the Kings Saturday.

The Penguins recent surge has a lot to do with the recent stellar play of Marc-Andre Fleury who picked up the OT shutout on Saturday. He is 5-1-1 with a 1.13 goals-against average and three shutouts over his last seven road starts – as good as any keeper in the league right now. Fleury has posted a 1.45 GAA and .946 save percentage in his last 11 games but is just 2-2-2 with a 2.51 GAA in the series.

Offensively the Penguins continue to be OK averaging 2.85 goals per game. They have been led by Evgeni Malkin who has been terrific lately. Malkin has 14 points over an eight-game stretch.

He has two goals and three assists in his last four against the Sharks. Patric Hornqvist goals and nine points in Pittsburgh’s last seven games and Blake Comeau has two points in two games.

There are a number of Penguins conspicuously absent from the Hot List but names like Crosby, Kunitz, Letang and Perron still exist and look ready for a breakout game. Crosby however has yet to score a goal in six career meetings with San Jose.

The San Jose Sharks played a pretty good game Saturday night – firing 40 shots at Eddie Lack. The offense looked dominant at times in that game but was unable to put the Canucks away last time out.

Joe Pavelski has four points in three games, Patrick Marleau has five points in five games, Brent Burns has four points in four games and Matt Nieto has three points in two games. Even Joe Thornton scored Saturday night – his first tally in 10 games.

The Sharks offense has been fine – San Jose’s defense has been a bit of average lately however – defending will likely be the difference between winning and losing Monday.

Speaking of the defense, Antti Niemi is 1-4-0 with a 2.65 GAA in his last five starts but looked good in a loss Saturday.

[dfads params=’groups=64161&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

He is 3-1-1 against the Penguins despite a 3.11 GAA. Niemi, like the rest of the team hasn’t been great – hopes are that he can rise to the occasion against a team that he has had success against in the past.

NHL Gambling Trends

• Under is 6-1-1 in PIT last 8 vs. Pacific.
• PIT are 8-3 in their last 11 Mon. games.
• PIT are 20-8 in their last 28 vs. Pacific.
• SJ are 1-9 in their last 10 home games.
• SJ are 2-8 in their last 10 Mon. games.
• Over is 9-3-2 in SJ last 14 overall.
• PIT are 1-10-1 in the last 12 meetings in San Jose.
• PIT are 3-15-1 in the last 19 meetings.

The Pittsburgh Penguins just can’t seem to win in San Jose and the Sharks just can’t seem to win at home lately. So which way do we go?

If the Penguins ever had a chance to beat the Sharks in San Jose it is now – when the Sharks are in the midst of a miserable streak at home. The Pens have looked like the elite team that they fancy themselves while the Sharks have looked merely average the last month or so.
