Waiting for the Pens is the suddenly surging Toronto Maple Leafs who are riding a three game win streak into Friday’s clash. After an ugly 5-0 loss at the Rangers Tuesday night the Penguins are now 3-1-0 on their five game trip while the Leafs are 4-0 in their last four games at Air Canada Center.

Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins were due for a dud after winning seven straight games and outscoring their opponents 33-8 during the streak. And on Tuesday night that is what they produced – a dud!

The offense had been sizzling before their game in New York and the defense had more than been holding its own.

The Penguins are far and away the best offensive team in the NHL – they are averaging 3.86 goals per game and before being shut out on Tuesday they had scored four of more goals in their previous four games. 33 goals during their seven game win streak is mighty impressive indeed.

Sid Crosby continues to be the most dangerous players on the planet. Crosby has 13 goals and eight assists in his last 13 against the Leafs.

Defensively the Pens haven’t been that bad either – they killed off 37 penalties before surrendering a goal Tuesday night.

Marc-Andre Fleury who made 23 saves in last month’s matchup and could be in goal again he has been terrific lately. He had a 1.15 goals-against average while winning six consecutive games before the dud Tuesday.

Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs, like the Pittsburgh Penguins have been clicking on all cylinders offensively lately. During their three game win streak the Leafs have scored 16 goals. Overall the Leafs are 6-1-1 in their last eight games and they have won four straight games on home ice.

Their latest win was probably their most impressive – a 6-1 beat down of the Bruins Wednesday night.

The Leafs enter Friday night’s game averaging a very good 3.31 goals per game and they can thank Phil Kessel who continues to light it up for the Leafs – eight goals and eight assists in his last 10 games. He has 10 goals and 11 assists on the years – his line combined for eight points against Boston.

Defensively the Leafs have been a tad suspect this season – it may cost them against the high scoring Pens. It is unclear who will start between the pipes but Jonathan Bernier should be the favorite. He is 4-0-1 with a 1.78 GAA in his last five starts and he played very well in Toronto’s loss to the Pens earlier this year.

James Reimer has been OK too – he has a respectable .925 save percentage so far with a 2.65 GAA and a 4-2 record.

NHL Gambling Trends

• PIT are 7-1 in their last 8 overall.
• Over is 8-2 in PIT last 10 vs. Atlantic.
• Over is 5-2-2 in PIT last 9 Fri. games.
• TOR are 6-2 in their last 8 overall.
• Under is 5-2-1 in TOR last 8 Fri. games.
• Over is 21-8-1 in the last 30 meetings.
• Over is 11-5-1 in the last 17 meetings in Toronto.

Pittsburgh has won three straight games against the Leafs and five of their last six meetings including a 5-2 win in Toronto October 11. Simply put the Penguins have owned the Leafs and Sid the Kid seems to save something special for the team he cheered for as a kid.

While I think the Penguins continue their dominance, the play here is the Over. The teams have combined to average 7.17 goals this year and they totaled seven goals in their first matchup of the season.

The Over 5 1/2 goals

Take the Over and enjoy a thoroughly entertaining high scoring affair!
