Tuesday night boasts a full slate on the NHL schedule with 10 games on the go. Edmonton and San Jose will wrap the night up with the late start on the West Coast. The Oilers finally snapped out of a losing skid that seemed like it might never end when they defeated the Sharks by a 2-1 score on Sunday.

The Sharks will have a chance to respond without a lot of time to dwell on the fact that they lost to one of the worst teams in the NHL that hadn’t won a game since November 9.

San Jose comes into this game as the heavy favourite but the Oilers should be playing with some confidence after finally snapping out of their 11 game losing streak against this team.

Oilers

Ding dong the streak is dead, Edmonton broke out of a losing skid that was almost starting to become comedic on Sunday. It’s a very good thing that they did because the road ahead doesn’t get much easier with the Shark on the road again tonight before a home and home with the Western Conference leading Anaheim Ducks. Edmonton was staring directly into the face of what could have quickly turned into a 15 game losing streak but give them credit, they answered the bell and caught a tired/underwhelming Sharks team and got themselves two points.

You want to say, “good for the Oilers, breaking out of a losing streak against a pretty tough team,” but also remember that this is a Sharks team that lost to Buffalo twice already this year and has not been the dominant Sharks team of old. Edmonton was fortunate to catch San Jose on the back end of back to back games in which they played a very hard fought game against the Flames that they won 3-2 the night before. The Oilers simply caught the Sharks with a half tank of gas and it showed as they held San Jose to just 21 shots on goal.

Tired or not though, this is the game plan that Edmonton has to take into every game, forget the crazy talent you have up front and commit to playing solid 200-foot hockey and limit the opposition’s chances. The Oilers have enough skill up front that the goals will come, they just need to focus on keeping the puck out of their end and net.

Sharks

You’d like to say the Sharks hit a new low by losing to the Oilers who were losers of 11 straight, but as mentioned this team was in all likelihood a bit tired from back to back games and probably came in taking Edmonton pretty lightly.

Before that loss however the Sharks had been playing much better hockey, winning four straight and against pretty stiff competition in Anaheim, Boston and Calgary. Sunday was simply an anomaly and San Jose was flat.

The Sharks will return home tonight after a brief two game trip through Alberta, but they have not been very good at the SAP Centre this year, with a record of just 5-4-2. In the past the Sharks have been dominant and nearly impossible to knock off at home and if this team that is on the outside of the playoff picture right now wants to get back in, they’re going to need to return to that form where coming into their building is a nightmare for the opposition.

Where San Jose needs to improve is their depth players and lesser knowns need to start pitching in more. The usual suspects Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture have all done their part, and Brent Burns has been a big contributor from the back end but there’s a steep drop off after those four with the exception of Tommy Wingels.

The likes of Tomas Hertl, Matt Nieto and Matt Irwin haven’t added much punch thus far.

Oilers vs. Sharks 4* Free Pick

The Oilers aren’t back by any means and in all likelihood will end up in a lottery spot for next year’s draft and possibly ruin another young superstar. That’s another conversation all together though. San Jose is still somewhat of an enigma to me, they’ve lost to some sub-par hockey teams this season (Columbus, Florida twice, Buffalo twice and Arizona) and they’ve struggled to maintain consistency.

Take San Jose.

After dropping a game that they probably should’ve at least earned a point in on Sunday, they’ll be hungry to get back on track and I think they beat the Oilers tonight.
