The San Jose Sharks end a home stand and will try to build on a three game win streak on Monday when they take on the visiting Edmonton Oilers. The Sharks have looked good after an unflattering stretch – three straight wins have come against the Kings, Ducks and the Blackhawks while the Oilers have been… the Oilers the last couple of weeks and are 4-6-0 in their last 10 games overall.

The Edmonton Oilers have looked a tad better the last couple of weeks but that isn’t saying much. The team is coming off a 4-2 loss at Calgary Saturday night and is just 4-17-3 on the road this year, although they have collected a point in five of their last seven away from home. The Oiler look to be in deep Monday when they take on a Sharks team that they have gone 6-20 in their last 26 meetings. Edmonton has lost 13 of their last 14 games in San Jose – not good!

Edmonton’s offense and defense continue to be among the worst in the NHL – they are averaging 2.24 goals per game and surrendering 3.36 goals against per contest. The Oilers could be without Taylor Hall for a fourth straight game which doesn’t bode well for the offensively-challenged club. Jordan Eberle has two goals and two assists in his past four games and Matt Fraser has three points in two games but that’s about where the good news stops for Edmonton.

Ben Scrivens started between the pipes in Saturday’s loss – he has now allowed three or more goals in four of his last five starts. It is unclear as to who will be named starter Monday but backup Victor Fasth won’t be much of an upgrade – he has won just four times this year with a 3.29 GAA and .891 save percentage although all four of his wins have come on the road.

Either way the Oilers look as though they will give up some goals on Monday leaving an unflattering offense to be the difference.

The San Jose Sharks dominance at home hasn’t been what we have come to expect this season but they have improved ahead of Monday night’s clash. After losing three straight at the Shark Tank, San Jose has strung together three straight wins at home against some pretty good competition.

San Jose has been playing well in both ends of the rink after an unflattering stretch. The offense has been clicking and the defense and goaltending seems to have turned a corner the last week or so. Overall San Jose is 17-7-2 in their last 26 games.

Offensively it has been the stars that have been getting it done. Joe Thornton has five points over the last three games, Patrick Marleau has six points in his past five games (two goals, four assists) and Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski have two goals apiece over the three wins. Pavelski has five goals and three assists in his last five against Edmonton.

Antti Niemi should get the call between the pipes Monday – he was terrific in a shutout win against Chicago on Saturday and is 5-0-1 in his last six starts.

The Edmonton Oiler have been giving up a boat load of goals as of late – no reason to think differently against a San Jose Sharks team that has looked much better in the offensive zone as of late. There is no way that San Jose should lose this game! Since there is little value on the Moneyline here – the play is the Over – 5 ½ goals.
