Deadline day as a pretty quiet one for both the Stars and Isles, which seems a bit surprising as they should both have a good idea of where they will end up when the regular season comes to a close. Dallas unloaded veteran Erik Cole for a few prospects the day before the March 2 deadline.

The Islanders added a few depth forwards in Dustin Jeffrey and Tyler Kennedy while swapping backup goalies with the Sabres, getting Michael Neuvirth in exchange for Chad Johnson.

Islanders

No real big names were brought in by the Islanders who are still chasing down the number one seed in both the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference.

The additions of Jeffrey and Kennedy will solidify and already deep group of forwards and the Johnson for Neuvirth deal looks like it was a knee jerk reaction after Johnson was pretty bad in a 5-3 loss to the Hurricanes on Sunday.

Dustin Jeffrey figures to slot in on the third line somewhere while Tyler Kennedy is an interesting pick up. The role playing winger has had spells in Pittsburgh and San Jose where at times he saw action on lines with Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby (Pitt) and Logan Couture, Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton (SJ).

Kennedy is not unfamiliar with being paired with elite level talent so he could be a potential fill in alongside John Tavares in the absence of Kyle Okposo, as the Islanders have been experimenting with a number of different right wingers on Tavares’ line.

When Jaroslav Halak is on his game this team is very tough to beat as they have no trouble filling the net, but despite a pretty tough defense core, they give up their share of goals.

Tonight is the first game of a four game road trip, and the last lengthy road swing of the season for the Isles who will need to put up some points on the trip to keep pace before a good slate of home games to close out their season.

Stars

It’s been a disappointing season for the Dallas Stars. The team that acquired Jason Spezza and Ales Hemsky in the offseason looked as if they had one of the more dynamic and talented groups of forwards in the West and that they could make a push for a wild card spot.

That has not panned out this season as the team has been miserable defensively and Kari Lehtonen has had a very mediocre season.

Tyler Seguin was on pace for a career year before going down with a knee injury and that all but spelled the end of what little playoff hopes this team may have had. Veteran forward Erik Cole was dealt a day before the trade deadline to Detroit for a pair of prospects who likely won’t make any immediate impact.

The Stars are in a very awkward spot right now at nine points back of a playoff spot, a position where making up that kind of ground is a huge task but they’re also too far ahead of the bottom feeders to start a free fall for a better draft spot. In all likelihood this team finishes around 20th – 24th in the league and gets themselves a pick between 7th and 11th.

Islanders vs. Stars 4* Free Pick

Goals should be scored in abundance in this one as both teams can score and neither plays particularly tight defensively. The Isles just have too much firepower and are overall a better team than the defensively deficient Stars.

The Isles were awful against the Hurricanes on Sunday so I’d expect them to have a good bounce back game as they have only lost consecutive games three times in the past two months. Take the Islanders in this one.
