The Islanders will be eager to avenge their worst outing of the season – a 5-2 loss to the lowly Edmonton Oilers Sunday while the Canucks will hope to build on an impressive 4-1 win against Detroit on Saturday night. The game features two of the hottest goaltenders in the game and two of the more successful power plays as of late in the NHL.

The New York Islanders currently sit in a tie with Pittsburgh atop the Metropolitan Division standings – their defense and their offense has been a nice surprise this year with goaltender Jaroslav Halak leading the way between the pipes and John Tavares and Kyle Okposo leading the charge offensively.

[dfads params=’groups=64160&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Halak had been on a seven game win streak before surrendering four goals on 22 shots against Edmonton. He has been remarkable otherwise in posting an 18-3-0 mark in his last 21 games with a 1.91 GAA. After a rare off-night we can expect Halak to be at his best against Vancouver, a team that he has gone 5-2-1 with a 1.99 GAA in his last eight starts.

Offensively the Islanders will test the Canucks mightily – their power play is seven for its last 20 and everybody seems to be contributing.

John Tavares leads the team with 17 goals and 19 assists already this year – near the top of the NHL in points, Kyle Okposo has seven points in his last seven games, Ryan Strome has seven points in four games, Johnny Boychuk has four points in four games and Nick Leddy has two points in three.

Tavares has three goals and five assists over four matchups in the series.

The Vancouver Canucks just won’t go away – every part of their game is clicking at the moment. Offensively Vancouver keeps getting it done – Henrik Sedin scored twice on Saturday night and brother Daniel had three assists.

Daniel now has four points in his last two games, Radim Vrbata has shrugged off a slump and has three points in his last two games and the Canucks power play has gone seven for its last 16.

Henrik has totaled five goals and seven assists during a nine-game point streak against the Islanders, while Daniel has recorded 11 points in his last eight against them – the two have combined for three goals and 14 assists in the last six games overall.

Vancouver has been and apparently will continue to be a deep team going forward – a lack of depth that had plagued this team seems to be a thing of the past.

Goaltender Ryan Miller has been arguably the biggest difference for the Canucks this year. He has 20 wins on the year and has gone 4-1-1 in his last six games with a 1.66 GAA over that span.

[dfads params=’groups=64161&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Miller has gone 5-1-0 with a 2.24 GAA versus New York over the previous three seasons.

Expect the Isles to make it two in a row in Vancouver as they give their best to erase the memory of a bad night in Edmonton.

New York Islanders + 109

To a man, the Islanders felt Sunday’s loss was unacceptable – they will be motivated Tuesday night at the expense of the Canucks.
