Another season, another respectable outing for the maddeningly consistent franchise, as the Wings sit third in the Atlantic division with an 11-5-5 record.

Philly currently sits sixth in the Metro division; it has struggled primarily thanks to spotty goaltending and a miserable penalty kill (30th in the league).

The Flyers are not without bright spots – they own two of the better line combinations in the NHL (Voracek-Giroux-Read on the top line and Simmonds-Couturier-Schenn on the third). That glut of talent is responsible for Philly ranking ninth in the league in goals per game.

Now, if goalie Steve Mason could play consistently, the Flyers would be a dangerous club.

There’s always an “if” in there, and thus the Orange-and-Black will fight to tread water in the Eastern Conference in 2014.

Meanwhile, the Red Wings are playing their brand of hockey under head coach Mike Babcock (stop drooling, Toronto Maple Leafs fans). Responsible defensive play, good skating and crisp special teams is the order of the day in Hockeytown, USA.

The slick scoring of Gus Nyquist, the playmaking of Henrik Zetterberg and the two-way game of Riley Sheahan are some examples of Detroit being Detroit, for what seems like decades now. Wait, it is decades. How long ago did Igor Larionov play in the league?

The Wings are coming off a narrow 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators thanks to two goals from Stephen Weiss, while Mason posted 40+ saves and the shutout for Philly, but still earned a loss following a 1-0 shootout defeat to Long Island.

It’s been that kind of year for the Flyers, currently sitting with a pedestrian 8-9-3 record.

If the two aforementioned lines can heat up for the road team, Philly should light Jimmy Howard’s lamp a few times. If Mason repeats – or comes close to duplicating –   his performance from Monday, Philly has a good chance to procure a win.

Like seemingly every season going back to Ron Hextall’s retirement, it usually comes down to goaltending with the Flyers. Mason is capable of playing very well, but you don’t know what you’re going to get from him on a nightly basis.

Plus, Detroit is tricky on home ice.

Detroit 4, Philadelphia 2

The Wings score enough, and though it hurts having superstar Pavel Datsyuk nicked up and D-man Brendan Smith on the DL, Babcock always finds the players from the farm team to plug in functionally.

4* Free Play: Take the OVER

Due to the talent level, you cannot sleep on Philadelphia on any given night, but the smart money is on the Red Wings at home on Wednesday night.
