The New Jersey Devils who are 2-6-0 in their last eight games travel to Edmonton to take on an Oilers team that fell to 2-7-1 with their home loss to Vancouver on Wednesday night.

The Oilers will be happy to see an Easter Conference team Friday – they are 6-2-1 this season versus the East and 0-9-1 against the West while New Jersey is 2-9-2 in their last 13 games on the road versus Western Canadian teams.

Devils

It isn’t difficult to see why the New Jersey Devils have been struggling – the team has scored just 14 times in their last eight games.

They are averaging 2.42 goals per game this year and 23.6 shots per game – near the bottom in the league in both categories.

If you think that there has been any optimism that things will change around for the Devils, a look at their last four games will put a stop to that – they have scored just three goals in those games and have been outshot in all. Mike Cammalleri has led the way offensively with seven goals this year but like the rest of the team has struggled to find the back of the net recently.

No other Devil has more than four goals on the year – futility at its finest!

It’s a good thing for Corey Schneider and a penalty killing unit that has not allowed a goal in the last 16 attempts. Schneider has started all 19 games and has a decent .910 save percentage while allowing a very respectable seven goals in his last four games.

Schneider is 5-2-0 with a 1.82 goals-against average in nine career games against Edmonton, the bulk of which came when he played for Vancouver.

Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers losing streak was stretched to four on Wednesday night against Vancouver but they did some OK things in the loss – the biggest of which was getting four goals by Ryan Miller. The problem Wednesday was their defense again – the Oilers allowed five goals and now average 3.37 goals against this year – not good!

Neither Oilers goaltender has a save percentage above .895 this year of a goals against under 3.09.

Unfortunately for Edmonton, the defense isn’t going to win any games – it is going to be up to an offense that has been below average to be the difference.

Edmonton is averaging just 2.53 goals per game this year – nearly one goal per game less than they are giving up! Taylor Hall collected a goal and an assist in two games since returning from a knee injury but Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is scoreless in two games and Jordan Eberle was virtually invisible against he Canucks.

The top line absolutely has to be terrific or the Oilers don’t win.

NHL Gambling Trends

Edmonton, off a four goal effort should be able to outscore the Devils and continue their good fortune versus the Eastern Conference.

Pick: Edmonton Oilers

As long as Edmonton isn’t playing a Western Conference team, they are formidable!
