Two teams going in opposite directions in the standings meet in Boston on a light Monday night in the NHL when the New Jersey Devils, losers of three straight games try to right the ship against the Boston Bruins who enter on a tidy four game win streak.

Injuries have played a big role in both team’s slow start but each team may get some key contributors back for Monday’s contest.

Devils

The New Jersey Devils have had a miserable time as of late – center Adam Henrique, defenseman Jon Merrill and forward Ryane Clowe will all miss Monday’s game.

The good news is that Mike Cammalleri and Marty Havlat – two of New Jersey’s best offensive players may return to action and not a minute too soon.

The Devils have averaged two goals per game in the last six contests without Cammalleri and Havlat and the team has failed to score more than three goals in 12 games – yuk!

Offense hasn’t been the only problem for the Devils this season – they are surrendering 3.14 goals per games while averaging 2.64 goals for.

Corey Schneider has been a major disappointment – 3-5-2 with a 3.18 GAA in his last 10 games overall. He should get the start Monday despite getting pulled in his last three starts.

Schneider’s issues have trickled down to a penalty killing unit that is just 65.5% on the year.

Bruins

The Boston Bruins could get back a key contributor back from injury Monday as well – Torey Krug may return from a broken finger joining David Krejci who returned Thursday.

Both are questionable however – their absence could be a major factor. Zdeno Chara, Kevan Miller and David Warsofsky all remain out for a Boston team that has overcome and won four straight games.

Boston’s patented defense has re-emerged after an unflattering stretch and has given up just seven goals during their four game streak – they are allowing just 22 shots per game and Tuukka Rask has been slamming the door. Rask has won his last three starts overall with a 1.64 GAA after a stretch of six games in which he allowed an uncharacteristic 3.25 goals per contest.

Rask is 3-2-2 with a 1.44 goals-against average versus New Jersey.

Boston’s offense has been OK this year – they looked good last time out scoring five against Edmonton.

That said only one Bruin has more than four goals in 15 games and only one has 12 points for Boston so far. Brad Marchand has four goals during a four-game point streak and is heating up right when the Bruins need him.

NHL Gambling Trends

• NJ are 3-8 in their last 11 overall.
• NJ are 16-39 in their last 55 Mon. games.
• Under is 40-17-9 in NJ last 66 Mon. games.
• BOS are 18-5 in their last 23 vs. Metropolitan.
• BOS are 37-14 in their last 51 home games.
• BOS are 36-15 in their last 51 Mon. games.
• NJ are 3-12 in the last 15 meetings.

Despite both teams’ issues to score goals this season, the play here is the Over – 5 goals. Corey Schneider has been terrible for New Jersey, the Devils Penalty Kill is brutal and Boston’s defense is banged up to say the least.

There is no value in picking the Bruins – I can’t see the Devils posting the upset.
