NHL Free Pick: Coyotes vs. Devils Betting Odds & Handicapping Preview

NHL Lines: Arizona vs New Jersey Pick

The NHL regular season’s finish line is starting to come into view and there are still about 22 teams that have a realistic shot at making the post season. Unfortunately for the two combatants in tonight’s match up they aren’t included in that group and are more likely looking to next year.

The Arizona Coyotes (20-32-7) visit the New Jersey Devils (24-26-9) on Monday night. Cappers Picks will provide free NHL picks all season so check back often.

As mentioned above, these teams are in all likelihood not making it to the post season this year. Devils fans and players may argue that at 10 points back of eighth place with 23 games remaining they’re still in striking distance, but the reality is that gap is just a bit too big and they would need a lot of help from other teams.

The Coyotes have been a non-factor all year essentially and are riding a nice five game losing streak coming into tonight’s game.

Coyotes

The visitors come into New Jersey on down slide and it’s likely that many Coyotes players are already planning their summer vacations as this team won’t be around come playoff time.

There have been some roadblocks for Arizona as they’ve been without Mikkel Boedker for over a month now and goaltender Mike Smith just has not had a very good year. The bottom line with this team however is that they are just not very good. Rob Klinkhammer (great name) is the lone Coyote with a plus/minus rating above zero.

The lone bright spots have been on the blue line as Keith Yandle is having a strong showing and leads the team in points with 40. Young defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson is third on the team in points and leads the team in goals with 17.

The downside of that defense pair having such a strong offensive showing is that it hasn’t shown up for them in the defensive end as Yandle is a team-worst -27 and Ekman-Larsson isn’t much better off at -18.

Devils

In a lot of ways the Devils are kind of like the Coyotes of the Eastern Conference. The overall talent on New Jersey is definitely better than what Arizona has but the Devils have a similar make up in that their offense is built around a pretty old core group.

Jaromir Jagr and Patrik Elias are both in the top four in Devils scoring and are a combined age of about 143. Adam Henrique looks to be ready to take the reigns as the team’s offensive leader as the 25 year-old has 31 points for the team lead, but he needs some good young talent around him going forward.

Rounding out the New Jersey retirement home are the likes of Scott Gomez (35),  Marek Zidlicky (37), Michael Ryder (34), Martin Havlat (33),  and Dainius Zubrus (36).

This Devils team will be in a big turnover state for the next three to five years as these players start to retire or perhaps go elsewhere as rental players for a Stanley Cup run.

Coyotes vs. Devils 4* Free Pick

I wouldn’t look to this game if you like offensive hockey as both teams have managed just 133 goals this season which has them tied for 28th in the NHL in goals scored, ahead of just Carolina and Buffalo.

I’ll go with the team that is not only better statistically but also playing much better hockey right now, and that’s the New Jersey Devils. Arizona is stuck in reverse right now and are staring in the face of a very ugly losing streak as they come in having dropped five straight and have the Rangers, Bruins, Islanders and Ducks on the horizon after they play the Devils.

Go with New Jersey in this game.
