The Montreal Canadiens play their second road game in two nights against a team that will make their season debut – the Washington Capitals. Montreal doesn’t get much of a break either – they play two more games on the road before finally getting home – they travel to Philadelphia Saturday and Tampa Monday – ugh!

The Capitals should be a different team with Barry Trotz at the helm – it could go very good, or it could go very bad.

The Montreal Canadiens earned a hard fought 4-3 win in Toronto last night – Tomas Plekanec had two goals, PK Subban and Max Pacioretty had the others – a pretty good sign for the Canadiens going forward. All of the players that are supposed to produce did. The trick is keeping it going on the road against a rested team.

PA Parenteau had two points Wednesday and Brenden Gallagher and Alex Galchechyuk each had assists – more good signs for the Canadiens. After getting outplayed for a good chunk of the first half of the game – the team seemed to get their legs – something that Washington will have to experience as they hit the ice for the first time this year.

Carey Price had 24 saves – he looked good but may sit in favor of Dustin Tokarski in this one. Tokarski is certainly a step down for the Habs.

The Washington Capitals did some good things during the offseason – they lured Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen from Pittsburgh to mesh with the style of play that new coach Barry Trotz hopes to play. Keep in mind that Trotz made Nashville a consistently good team with a tenth of the talent that he has in Washington. I like the Capitals to challenge for a playoff spot this year but for it to take some time to adjust to what Trotz wants to do.

The Capitals still have some guy named Alex Ovechkin who should be motivated to shut some haters up. Ovechkin has some work to do – he was woefully poor defensively – something that Barry Trotz may be able to clean up. Again – it’s going to take some time for Ovi to catch on to Trotz’s style – but it will come.

Raise your hand if you know the name of the starting goaltender for the Washington Capitals – me neither!

The Montreal Canadiens played a pretty good road game on Wednesday night – they got outplayed at times but weathered the storm. Against a team that will likely be slow out of the gate look for the Habs to do it again Thursday.
