This is a squad built on young promise and talent. They look built to win, and that’s exactly what they’ve been doing of late.

The dynamic core of John Tavares, Kyle Okposo, Josh Bailey, Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson has the Isles sitting at 32-14-1 on the year, good for tops in the Metropolitan division.

It hasn’t just been the lamp-lighting, either. The acquisitions of defensemen Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy in the offseason was a master stroke from oft-maligned GM Garth Snow.

Combine that with some stout back-stropping from Jaroslav Halak, and Long Island is in thick of the Stanley Cup race after decades of being out of it.

The Bruins, on the other hand, have been at or near the top of the mountain for several seasons now, but they seem to be trending in the opposite direction.

They sit fourth in the Atlantic division and have withstood injuries to linchpins like Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara, but the goal-scoring has dried up in Massachusetts.

You have to think the franchise would love to have scoring phenom Tyler Seguin back, whom they jettisoned a couple of seasons ago for Loui Eriksson. They could sorely use the extra goals Seguin provides.

If it weren’t for Boston’s still-stout defensive concept, the Bruins would likely be out of the playoff race. If they want success in the latter third of the regular season and the playoffs, they must find someone to lean on offensively.

If they can’t it should be a changing of the guard in the Eastern Conference.

The Isles are poised to be one of the clubs to bring about such change. The team is a bit of a leaky ship on the defensive end sometimes, but they drive possession and simply out-score all comers.

Considering five players on New York have 10+ goals on the campaign (plus Frans Nielsen with nine) and you shouldn’t be surprised.

Tavares is one of the league’s elite players that should be discussed in the same breath as Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Toews, etc.

Look for the Islanders to further that aim on Thursday night at home.

If he can guide his club to a deep postseason run in the last year the team is located at decrepit Nassau Coliseum, it could cement his status.
