Along with the Ducks and the Blackhawks, the West is wide open, but also vastly superior to the league’s Eastern Conference.

Blues vs. Kings NHL Preview

It’s been a long time since St. Louis goalie Brian Elliott was the unquestioned top dog of a team. In fact, it may be unprecedented.

After being jettisoned from Ottawa after some up-and-down play, the Newmarket, Ontario native always had Jaroslav Halak or Ryan Miller nipping at his heels (or benching him) for the Blues.

Halak and Miller are finally out of the picture and the Blues’ chances between the pipes rest squarely on Elliott. He’s a talented netminder and should be up to the challenge.

Rest assured, the Blues are no one-trick pony. The offseason addition of forward Paul Stastny just further bolsters their impressive depth throughout the roster. You’ll find no Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin-level stars on St. Louis, but the team is incredibly solid from top to bottom.

Thursday night’s tilt in Southern California will also feature two stud defencemen hitting their primes in St. Louis’s Alex Pietrangelo and L.A’s Drew Doughty. Bell-cow blueliners like that are hard to come by and when your team gets one, a GM ought to hang onto them for dear life.

In order to get a road win, the Blues must solve masterful Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick. The award-winning veteran is coming off a superb performance against Edmonton on Tuesday in a 6-1 win.

Youngsters like Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli join the veteran goal-scoring prowess of Jeff Carter and Anze Kopitar to make Los Angeles a tough customer and a surefire Stanley Cup favorite once again.

This game is bigger than the standings, especially for St. Lou. The Blues need to prove they should be discussed in the same breath with L.A. and Chicago; they’ve been a darling pick in the playoffs for a couple of seasons now, yet haven’t gotten it done.

Thursday night’s tilt at the Staples Center would really be a statement game if the Blues could come into the Kings’ barn and leave with two points. I expect St. Louis to be up for this game and for the Kings to perhaps be on cruise control after that thrashing of the Oilers.
