The visiting St. Louis Blues are riding high among the top teams in the Western Conference, while the ailing Flyers might have signalled their look to the future when moving key blueliner Brayden Coburn at the deadline. How does it shake out Thursday night in the City of Brotherly Love?

[dfads params=’groups=64160&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

The Flyers moved solid defenseman Coburn to Tampa Bay at the trade deadline, for Radko Gudas as well as a first and third-round pick. The return is great for Philly, though its immediate are hopes are likely dashed with jettisoning the Flyers’ best D-man.

Philly got hot right after the All-Star Break, which gave fans hope. Yet, the squad has come back down to Earth and consequently, the Flyers are in that murky no-man’s land, where they are not quite contenders and not quite bottom-dwellers.

The Blues, meanwhile, look like they are built to win in the postseason. Their 40-18-5 record is good for 85 points and second in the lethal Central division, behind only Nashville.

All elements of St. Louis’s game are solid, accentuated by a breakout campaign from Russian winger Vladimir Tarasenko. The 23-year old’s 31 goals and 61 points pace the team in scoring.

Not yet in his prime, the sky is the limit for Tarasenko.

Apart from the Russian, St. Louis enjoys a balanced scoresheet; contributions are made from several players, both forwards and defense. Skaters like Paul Stastny, T.J. Oshie and David Backes are the types you want in your sweater with the playoffs approaching.

Don’t be mistaken: Philadelphia is not without upper-echelon talent. Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds are having great seasons and they represent a solid basis to build around.

Yet, the Flyers would be best to exercise patience (for once), while they gather the other components necessary for sustained success in the NHL.

The aforementioned three and Sean Couturier are either squarely in or not yet in their primes, so the foundation of the team has propped the window open.

Smart draft picks acquired in the Tampa Bay deal will be crucial to Philly’s success in 2016 and beyond.

4* Free NHL Pick: St. Louis 2, Philadelphia 1 (OT)

In the present, I like St. Louis to take care of business on the road, en route to hounding the Nashville Predators for the top spot in the division.
