The Avalanche have been playing arguably their best hockey of the season – 11-4-1 in their last 15 games while the Flames have lost three of their last four games overall.

The Colorado Avalanche have been arguably the most disappointing team in the Western Conference this year but have turned it around lately – perhaps too late? The biggest difference for the Avs has been the play of Seymon Varlamov who was huge for this team last year.

Varlamov is 6-0-1 with a 1.43 GAA and .956 save percentage in his last seven games and has helped a team that has allowed 2.73 goals per game this year -bottom third in the NHL. Varlamov is once again doing his part… and the offense is following suit.

Colorado is averaging over 3 goals for per game in their last 15 – about half a goal per game than they have averaged this year. The Hot list is lengthy – Gabriel Landeskog has nine pints in eight games, Jarome Iginla has eight points in eight games, Alex Tanguay has three points in three games, Jan Hejda has two points in two games and John Mitchell has three points in four games.

The Avalanche are finally the well rounded team that most envisioned before the season started. Although they may not make the playoffs, they certainly look like a team that will make things miserable for a few teams down the stretch.

Could the clock be striking midnight on the Cinderella Flames? Calgary clings to a playoff spot but have lost three of their last four games ahead of Monday’s clash including a 3-2 OT defeat last time out at home against Columbus.

Offense hasn’t been much of a problem – the Flames have gone 10 for 33 on the power play over their last nine games. Sean Monahan has 12 goals and eight assists in his last 17 games, Jiri Hudler has seven goals and nine assists in his last 10 and Johnny Gaudreau has five goals and eight assists in his last 10 contests.

That said there are a number of key Flames that have struggled lately – Dennis Weidman and TJ Brodie each have one point in their last four games, David Jones is pointless in three games, Mason Raymond hasn’t posted a point in four games and Joe Colborne hasn’t hit the score sheet in six games.

The Flames defense has gone south – the loss of Mark Giordano looks like it is finally catching up to this team. They have given up 21 goals in their last seven games and the goaltending hasn’t been great. Karri Ramo, Monday night’s starter is 2-1-1 in his last five starts with an unflattering 3.11 GAA and .896 save percentage – not the kind of numbers that a playoff hopeful. Ramo has a career 2-4-0 record and 2.86 goals-against average versus Colorado.

The Flames on the other hand just don’t seem to have the magic they has even two weeks ago.

Colorado Avalanche +121
